I will have to hear their next release to see if I agree 100% with this one. Im mixed on this release. I like the fact that Baroness is trying to push beyond the sound they have had since their beginnings, its a must for all bands to grow and experiment. My only issue with this album is the vocals often sound forced into a area and sound that doesn't sound comfortable as well as the music. The band is talented and creative but I agree with some others that several of the tracks fall into the contemporary alternative category and thats not any place for a band who wants to be recognized for its sound and experimentation. I love tracks like Take my bones away and March to the sea, I hear a lot of early Baroness in those and I especially love the move towards more prog sounding songs like Cocainum , Sea Lungs and the Color theme songs. I think if they find a way to merge and complete those sounds of those song with strong lyrics and riffs for the follow up releases after this album, I believe they will find their niche for a few more albums and even more respect from their older fans and a wider but appreciative newer audience. I give it a 3, only because being a older guy thats been through the early metal, punk, post punk and later grunge / indy sounds I would say this ways a bit too heavy with contemporary alternative music for my taste. Maybe it should have just been the Yellow Album, because thats basically all i purchased. Its not strong enough as a double.
I'm not dissapointed. First Baroness exposure for me was Blue, which I think is a wonderfully "retro" and jammin piece of work. They play well together have a cool, unique vibe that reminds me of Nirvana in the way they seem to groove together. This is not grunge though. I've read that they sound like Mastodon too. I don't think they sound at all like Mastodon. Mastodon is darker and very different rhythmically. The Hunter is a ROCKIN album though. Anyway, Just because they are both progressive bands, people lump them together but that's done out of haste not examination. I though Red was very boring by the way. I downloaded it after listening to Blue for a while and I was dissapointed. This album is much better than Blue and Red is almost an early demo by comparison to either. This band seems to be developing rapidly. I Must see them live...
Not the same.. Now, I may be "a narrow minded musical listener" but this is what I think of the album. My first baroness album was Blue Record and I loved it, so naturally I was excited to here from them again. However, Yellow & Green is not the same as blue. Yellow starts out sort of similar to Blue, and Red seeing as it has some up beat songs. Green however is mostly filled with slower tempos and mellodies, not what I've become accustomed to with previous records. I'm all for different types of music, BUT I like when I can come to expect somthing of a similar output from album to album. I hope in the future they plan on going back to there uptempo doom metalish style.
Another Great Baroness Album. Wonderful album and, contrary to others on this thread, I think it plays nicely with Red and Blue; just a bit different. One of the best, most original bands on the market now. Thank you guys for putting on a great show in Indianapolis by the way!
Some Truly Amazing Material. One of my top 50 albums.
