Good-great songs overshadowed by garbage production.. I love this band. They make amazing music. I was so excited to get their last album, Purple, until I heard it for the first time and it sounded like my speakers were blown. It was incredibly frustrating because the songs were great but the production made the album nearly unlistenable for me. When I got the new album, Gold & Grey I was hoping so badly that the audio quality on the last album had been some kind of mistake or one-time poor decision but that hope was destroyed within the first second of listening. Clearly the clipping, the distortion, and absent dynamics are a deliberate choice by the band and it’s a confounding choice. Their older albums sound good and their songwriting has only improved with time but the audio quality is so bad I honestly can't listen to this album for more then 10-15 minutes at a time before the crappy sound turns me off. I wish it weren’t the case.

Meh.... Don't understand how this is in Metal category or hard rock for that matter....sounds like weak alternative to my ears. And the production is terrible . Meh.....I just dont get it at all.

Shock me. Shock Me off of Purple is one of all all time favorite tunes. Been waiting for news of a new album. It’s a good day today.

Arthouse Rock. Not your typical rock band. Which is what we need honestly in these days of over-produced garbage. As a producer / mixer myself. Production is an issue. Some songs sound just fine. Some sound not so fine. Drums are simply too distorted / compressed for my taste. But this is their choice. If you Don’t like it? Well guess you need to move on. Song wise. Im diggin most of them. Definitely not as many strong ones as on their previous efforts. I do feel Gina has added something unique and cool. Looking forward to where they go from here.

Embarrassing. “Metal” is not a word I would use to describe this. Poop would be better.

Incredible album. Will be on the best of 2019 list.

Lo Fi Production is Part of Their Charm. To all the people complaining about the production: the band doesn’t care, and neither do the majority of fans. It’s an aesthetic choice and if you can’t appreciate it, too bad for you. I’m very excited for this album! I love their music and their production!

Y. Bad production

Bummer. Songs sound great, but... If this was a deliberate decision to "artist low-fi", and we all think is was, they did a terrible job. Instead of sounding like it was recorded on a 1/4" reel, tube consol with vintage preamps, it sounds like writing with a pen thats running out of ink. I get the limmit on pollish, but this just creates fatigue and frustration. dynamics are lost in a buzzy honky over limmited threshold. Bummer

Cmon. Yes, the music is good, but the production is absolute garbage. Anyone who says that they prefer this type of production, or that they “don’t care” that it sounds awful because “low fi is part of their charm,” not only need their ears checked, but their heads as well. A certain “reviewer” acting pretentious about legitimate criticism is part of the overwhelming minority who are enlightened enough to prefer appalling sound fidelity. I guess the rest of us commoners just don’t understand how TERRIBLE production enhances the listening experience. It would actually be nice to hear all of the great things happening with the instruments, instead of hearing severe sound compression that makes speakers sound like they are going to fall apart. It’s absolutely idiotic to make a conscious decision to destroy the quality of your music through intentionally poor production. It has ruined a few of their albums for me, so I’m a hard pass on this one unless it is re-recorded.

Lost their greatness. Red, Blue, nothing good after. Was a huge fan, but the lost me after blue

Production horrible. How can they keep making the same mistake....The production is awful (again). The songs and musicianship is sooooooo good, but it doesn't mean much if you can't hear it. If Baroness would actually get decent a production/mixing team, they would be one of the biggest rock bands in the world. So disappointing.

Solid, progressive, but.... I’ve been a Baroness fan for years. I own all their albums and have listened to them countless times. Like any new release from them, G&G is different from anything they’ve done before, in a good way. What you need to know is this: if you like Baroness, this is a great album. For a newcomer to their music, I’d suggest starting with Blue or Green & Yellow (my personal favorite). Yes, the production on this one isn’t the best, but it’s far from unlistenable. For all the naysayers, put on a quality set of headphones and give it another go.

Long time Comin’. The evolution of this band is just amazing Maturity of sound exploding into a fuzzy overdriven symphony The musicianship of Baroness is second to none Please support these great musicians Thank you Baroness! It was worth the wait!!🤘👍

Production is terrible/the rest is pretty good. The production on this is flat out awful. Purple sufferd a bit from the same problem. It sounds like everything is peaking out and most of the sound has a layer of fuzz on it. I had written an early review so here's my thoughts after multiple listenings: This contains some very cool writing and ideas. I think it's more like Yellow & Green than any other album in thier past. It contains some really great guitar playing and Gina Gleason fits in as a fine addition to the band. I would highly reccomend getting it if you are a Baroness fan, just be ready to be disappointed by the production. Ths sad thing is, that the better the sound system you play it on, the worse it sounds.

Boring. I LOVED both Blue and Purple. But this is lifeless. It doesn't go anywhere or do anything cutting edge or exciting. Guess the old guitarist had more to do with the sound than we thought

This is not metal. This is trash pop music

The production is just fine. It's more than just fine, it's fantastic. Good instrument separation. Good ambience. A bit on the high end maybe, but very clean. There is some purposeful distortion on the drums at some points, but if you don't get that then I guess you don't get what musicians are after, which is not always going to be clean. This album is brilliant, their best work yet. An amazing triumph. Don't listen to the naysayers.

not again. Good tunes. Hopefully I'm around long enough to buy a remastered version of them some day...

Amazing Songs, Bad Production. I love Baroness, but the production on these songs is atrocious. I am still giving these songs five stars because the songs stand on their own, regardless of the production. Just image how epic they would be if they weren't clipping every two seconds.

Gold and Grey (eh and meh). This album is pretty lackluster. It has a few solid tracks but overall it’s not that great of a record. Which is a bummer, because the current lineup are all super talented musicians. I guess if the band is happy with what they put out, than really that’s all that matters. “I’d Give Anything” is a beautiful song but overall this album is just lacking for me. Already waiting for the next album.

Audio version of a black and white photo?. UPDATE: 6/14/19 Full album review. Excellent!! I’ll stick by my opinions based on the first three songs below. The sound qualities gives me the impression of an artistic photo... not black and white as I described below, but more of a subtle sepia sound color tone, very consistent with the gold and gray title. Outstanding! Am I hearing colors??? Wow!?! Great work of art here guys!! Five star for sure. I won’t be surprised if this ends up being my favorite Baroness album... time will tell. I wish I had music recording training to know how to describe this, but "something" is missing in the sound. Other reviewers say produciton is bad, and I guess I have to agree. Sounds like a demo tape? Flat? I just don't have the vocabulary. On the bright side, the song writing is brilliant as always, and that cover art, WOW!!. And maybe the sound is supposed to be that way, you know, kinda gold and gray instead of bright orange? Black and white photography is an artistic thing. Hmm. I'll give 5 stars anticipating I'll appreciate the muted sounds when I listen in context of the full album.

Epic. It’s a beautiful sonic journey that captivates front to back. Not a bad track on here. Gina adds a whole new dimension in the best way.

Powerful. Fantastic album, very strong stuff

🍊Gold and Grey will be awesome!!. Very very excited !!! Thank you Baroness! 🤘🏻

Baroness Deserve to Be Heard. Baroness have created one of the finest hard rock albums of the decade. Now, one note: this isn't a "metal" album. It's certainly not another Blue Record (recommended listening from Baroness before you pick this one up), although it does retain some of the left-field aesthetic of that album. If you're coming in expecting pummeling double kick and vocal-shredding howls, this isn't for you. With that in mind, Gold and Grey stands head and shoulders above most of today's hard rock. The band displays a fine craftsmanship in their songwriting and performance. From the sheer passion of "Seasons" to the syncopated transition from "Tourniquet" to "Anchor's Lament," this is a highly rewarding listen. One step further, however, lies in the production. While many listeners immediately found reproach in the heavily distorted, crunchy sound of the album, I found it to be a daring artistic statement. Baroness don't conform to the norm; nothing here is clean or perfect, but Baroness also don't sacrifice dynamic range for the intensity of the production. Several very well done instrumental interludes throughout (namely, "Blankets of Ash") ensure that the entire album isn't jacked up to eleven. Also, while the distortion does obscure the drums and other components quite a bit, it brings the vocals to the forefront. It grants Gold and Grey a highly melodic quality which so much hard rock and metal music lacks. That’s why it’s such a point of contention between the average listeners and those seeking a more daring display of artistry. The production can be distracting at first, but in my book and after giving the album several listeners it's a definite pro. Gold and Grey isn’t revolutionary. It probably won’t change the face of rock music. But it still stands as one of the finest displays of creativity from that genre in recent years, and as such deserves to be heard by anyone who follows hard rock. This is fine art. Challenge yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

What happened?. I absolutely love this band. Just caught the on tour in Portland Oregon. I have loved every single they have released so far on this new album. BUT THE PRODUCTION IS FLAT OUT HORRIBLE. It almost makes this unlistenable. For a band that I have found sonically amazing in so many levels this is a major step backwards. I hope the release a remastered version ASAP.

GRASSOLEN420. Great BAND!!!

Still worth a listen. My least favorite out of all their albums but still awesome nonetheless. Production is a little weak but I don’t think it takes away the enjoyment of listening to baroness

Who Signed Off On The Final Mixes??. As someone who has a degree in sound engineering, the sheer amount of lackluster attention to the overall mixing and post-production is seriously disturbing. Hire a different producer or perhaps a more vocal engineer. It sounds bad at best and even worse on a hi-res system. Playing is top notch, but all the best players in the world do not stand a chance against an untenable mix and master. I urge you to go back to the originals and remix.

Love the songs-hate the production. I know it’s a choice. It’s a bad choice. It ruins any merit to the songs if you recoil from to much fuzz drowning out all the beautiful nuances. This album more than any other Baroness album has those moments where your getting lost in the music and the noise pulls you out of it. It’s great album but disappointing at the same time. 5 stars with clean production.
