Best Grateful Dead Album!. Better than Working Man's Dead and more authentic and energetic (to me) than American Beauty. This album simply showcases a very tight group playing great songs. Some really good arrangements of country songs like "Mama Tried" and some great originals such as "Wharf Rat" and "Playing in the Band".

Excellent, excellent. This is one of my favorite albums. Lovely selection of live stuff from a good era in the band's history. Sometimes it almost sounds like a studio recording, but still with that live energy. Any Dead Head needs this album.

Amazing!. This is one of of the great live albums (along with the earlier Live Dead and the later Europe '72). I like the mix of material on this compilation. I was at some of these shows and if you listen with headphones, especially to Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road and Johnny B. Goode, you can hear the audience going nuts. There was, truly, nothing like a Grateful Dead concert!

one of the best live cds i have ever heard. buy this

finally. after anthem of the sun, aoxomoxoa, and live dead, which were mediocore albums they realease a fantastic collection of a bunch amazing songs and this ties with american beauty for best dead studio album

Terrific album. Very accesible, good recording--essential album. Contains classics Bertha, Playingin the Band, The Other One, Me and My Uncle, Wharf Rat, and Not Fade Away>Goin Down The Road. A must-have. But dont get this one get the expanded remaster.

Timeless Classic. What more can i say, this album is a Timeless Classic, every song is as good as the next song.

Groovy. Great album, really love "Me & My Uncle" & "Mama Tried"

First album huge sucess. If you are new to the grateful dead and wanna give them a try deffinatly listen to this cd. It's filled with a mix of blues, rock, and slow rock deffinatly a good buy

60's, 70's, it's all a little blurry. .....except this album came out in 1971

One of the best 60s albums. the SF groups like The Dead, Airplane, Santana, etc were what made the 60s the best decade (IMHO) I've lived. This is one of the best albums of that time.

THAT'S IT FOR THE OTHER ONE!!!!!. Absolutely killer live album. Probably the best they ever put out. Phil Lesh's book says the band ran upstairs to the soundboard to see if the sound engineer recorded the show or not. Luckily he did!!! Amazing Other One, Bertha, Uncle, and Johnny B. not to mention all the other tracks.

A perfectly human album. I am 72 yrs. old now 2017 and although I am not a 'deadhead' , I have always loved the Dead prior to this record and beyond . This record just blew my mind . Every song is probably the best version ever played by anybody , even the originators… It is an unbelievable album !

Perfect Dead album. Great selection of songs for vetran or beginner. Standouts include "Me and my uncle", "Playing in the band", "Bertha" and my favorite version of "Not fade away" ever. And an awsome cd cover too....

Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses). As good as "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty" were, the Dead were a live band, and this collection of songs from their spring '71 tour is a snapshot of them at their early peak. Everything was spot on, but of the dozens of 'The Other One' versions I have, this is singularly the best - tight, nuanced, just the right length, and more purposeful than any version I know of. All you kids out there who are curious about the Dead need to listen to this album about 10 times in a row. Like Bach, the Dead took all sorts of influences - folk, blues, jazz, gospel, and (of course) rock and created something utterly unique.

So good. So good If you're familiar with the dead then you need no help in understanding how good this album is. If you're new to the dead this is a great starter album. Jerrys soul pours through his guitar here. Pig pen on big boss man is golden. "You ain't so big, you just tall, that's just about all."

❤️. ❤️

Great intro to The Grateful Dead. I never knew much about The Grateful Dead until i fell in love with American Beauty. After wearing out Beauty and Workingman's Dead, I was more interested to learn about their live work and I started here. Some good jams without being overwhelming and staying in the stoner cowboy vein of the two previously mentioned studio albums, Skull & Roses is a great place to start getting into The Grateful Dead's live work and The Grateful Dead album I return to the most.

one of the best live albums. this was the grateful dead's second live album, compiled from recordings made in 1971. it is a really nice addtion to their catalog, not only because it introduced necessary tracks like bertha, me and my uncle, and wharf rat (one of my all-time favorites), but it contains some really great jams too. most notable is the other one, a song debuted on the dead's second album, anthem of the sun, but here is expanded into one of the band's most awesome jamming vehicles. and the not fade away / goin' down the road feeling bad sequence really rocks. playing in the band is also another great tune introduced here, before it appeared on bob weir's "ace", and while this is a good version it is nothing compared to the psychedelic monster it would become later on. if your have live dead and europe '72, and want to hear more of what the dead were all about this should be your next purchase.

SORRY ITUNES. as much as i love the dead...especially this and europe 72....i will never buy them here...my 40 odd year old vinyl records work just as well

Great album to take you to the next level. For anyone who considers him/herself to be just a casual fan, but who thinks the Dead collection has more to offer them after the "Skeletons" FM radio selections, start HERE! This is an essential album to listen to and own if you want to take your Dead listening experience to the next level. The very first time I listened to it, the country/bluegrass style of this collection of songs are what opened me up to a side of the Dead that I didn't know existed.

a must have. Trust a 40 yr Dead Head. Europe 72 has what Dead Heads affectionatly love, which are epilogs where they kind of somehow go off on a tangent ,then somehow bring it back with an amazing precision. Which makes you wonder can you even practice something like that. A question that ony they know , but we love to listen to. Enjoy, the best way to enjoy the Dead is related to Jerry's nickname. But certainly not necessary.

Really Feels Good. Although I do not consider myself a deadhead in any sense of the word, I do love some of their great stuff, any this release falls into that category. This and Europe 72 are my favorite Dead albums. Also the sound that this 35 year old master has is astonishing. Bob and Betty rule

Great Album. Love their version of "Not Fade Away…"

A great live set. The only problem i have is that Itunes no longer carries the Deluxe Edition here for this album (same for the Wake of the Flood Deluxe Edition). However these tracks here give you an excellent idea of what a Dead show gave you. So purchase this and enjoy

Great example of early-70's Dead. "Skull and Roses" was one of the Grateful Dead's favorite albums that they recorded. This album showcases the band in their glory before the death of organist/singer Ron "Pig-Pen" McKernan and before the arrival of jazz-influenced pianist Keith Godchaux. The album's not my favorite (Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are better) but is a fantastic example of the Grateful Dead jamming to some of their best songs and amazing covers. "Bertha," "Playing in the Band," "The Other One," and "Not Fade Away / Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad" are exceptionally good.

This Is The One. This live album is so good I can't stand it. It's the album that got me into the Dead back in the early 70's of my adolescence and I've never stopped listening to it regularly. This is the Dead rockin' at their lean, mean best.

good stuff. Skull and Roses is probably my favorite Dead album. Anyone from a loyal Deadhead to someone who isn't very familiar with the Dead's tunes would enjoy this album. Mama Tried, Me & My Uncle, and Johnny B. Goode are amazing covers of old country songs that the Dead turned into amazing numbers. Playing and Wharf Rat are my two favorite songs on this CD, Wharf Rat a mysterious, intriguing, and baked jam, Playing in the Band, a Grateful Dead classic and concert favorite. I hope you enjoy this album, I certainly do.

Hey, let's release some new tunes. on a live album. No reruns here, but Bertha, Wharf Rat, Playin in the Band. This was my introduction to the Dead after Skeletons from the Closet many years ago. I know now that some of this material was pulled from shows with "all the hits." Amazeballs.
