Great example of early-70's Dead. "Skull and Roses" was one of the Grateful Dead's favorite albums that they recorded. This album showcases the band in their glory before the death of organist/singer Ron "Pig-Pen" McKernan and before the arrival of jazz-influenced pianist Keith Godchaux. The album's not my favorite (Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are better) but is a fantastic example of the Grateful Dead jamming to some of their best songs and amazing covers. "Bertha," "Playing in the Band," "The Other One," and "Not Fade Away / Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad" are exceptionally good.

finally. after anthem of the sun, aoxomoxoa, and live dead, which were mediocore albums they realease a fantastic collection of a bunch amazing songs and this ties with american beauty for best dead studio album

one of the best live albums. this was the grateful dead's second live album, compiled from recordings made in 1971. it is a really nice addtion to their catalog, not only because it introduced necessary tracks like bertha, me and my uncle, and wharf rat (one of my all-time favorites), but it contains some really great jams too. most notable is the other one, a song debuted on the dead's second album, anthem of the sun, but here is expanded into one of the band's most awesome jamming vehicles. and the not fade away / goin' down the road feeling bad sequence really rocks. playing in the band is also another great tune introduced here, before it appeared on bob weir's "ace", and while this is a good version it is nothing compared to the psychedelic monster it would become later on. if your have live dead and europe '72, and want to hear more of what the dead were all about this should be your next purchase.

First album huge sucess. If you are new to the grateful dead and wanna give them a try deffinatly listen to this cd. It's filled with a mix of blues, rock, and slow rock deffinatly a good buy

Timeless Classic. What more can i say, this album is a Timeless Classic, every song is as good as the next song.
