Unformed my arse. This is a fabulous, passionate, sink in your soul kind of album. I loved it when it came out and I just bought it again because I can't stand not having it in my collection. Fiona has developed into a true amazing talent, but I think her future was obvious with this album. I still think it is her best album. Don't agree with iTunes negative review

amazing. love this album!!!!

TIDAL. The child is brilliant...........was and ever will be.

Classic Album. I thoroughly enjoy Fiona Apple's debut album, but I do seem to enjoy the second half a little more than the first. Don't know why, must be my personal taste. Otherwise, it's fantastic. Well worth it.

I like all the songs except for The First Taste. iTunes reviewer must have no music taste. If you like Fiona, you'll like Regina Spektor, Frou Frou/Imogen Heap, Kate Nash, Liz Phair (Except for her self titled album, although I do like it, it's not the same style), Sara Barelleis, Erin McCarley, Christina Perri, Lykke Li, Cat Power, Garbage and Anna Nalick. Actually the list goes on & on but I started with the closest to Fiona's style to the farthest (who really aren't that far at all). Don't just buy Criminal, buy the whole thing

You know I'd be insane.... You made me a shadow boxer, baby. Cause I don't know when you're going up make your move. Such a classic album.

Fiona Fan!!!. I just love the depth of her music. The verses are so intense and heartfelt. This is real music! Love this album, been listening to it for years on CD, and now bought it for my iPhone. I actually wore the disk out! Thanks!!!

Shadow boxer baby!. Not sure what movie I was going to see when this song played in the theater before starting. I immediately bought the album and have replaced a few times. This song an all time favorite along with Mazzy Star, and Beth Ortin at that time.

Classic.. This album is a classic. I still listen to this album 18 years later and the timeless sound is present. The arrangements and medleys are deep. The lyrics and piano riffs are what makes me love this album.

Fiona is amazing!. I cannot believe I waited so long to buy this album! I have always loved Fiona and this album just proves her amazing musical talent! I listen to this album on repeat and every time it makes me dislike mainstream music more and more! In a world of Nikki Minaj and a bunch of other auto tuned musicians, if you can call them that, Fiona proves an amazing voice and musical talent do exist!

the main review of this album is WHACK!. Who the F*** reviewed this album for Apple's iTunes??? They are gravely mistaken, and it's a HUGE mistake that it's such a bad review, when clearly the "average" rating for this album is 5 stars....nice work Apple! I mean, Fiona in this instance...not the company. Buy this album if you acually appreciate good, raw, honest music...probably the best overall teenage debut album in the past 25 years.

All songs didn’t download! Please help!. All songs didn’t download! Please help!

Great Album. I'm very hard on new music and I loved this album from day one. Sleep to dream is an amazing way to start the album out. I love almost every track. Sullen Girl and Give Me the First Taste (Those might not be the names, but they are the chorus) are a couple of non singles that are emotional in different ways. There's a sort of jazz feel to this album- and maybe to a lot of her music now that I think about it. A great debut and my favorite album of hers with Extraordinary Machine coming in second. That album is genius.

Fiona rocks!. Fiona Apples debut album. I can still remember seeing the incredible music video to 'sleep to dream' on MTV (when they actually showed music videos). It was like nothing I had ever heard or seen before, oh yeah and I also think she is hot too! Fiona Apple is a true original! This album is choke full of jazzy goodness. I listen to so much guitar-based Alt-rock that it is nice to have Fiona Apple on my ipod for somehting different sounding, her piano is always there for a nice break as it were. My favorite tracks on here are 'sleep to dream' and 'never is a promise'. Not only are the songs good, but the music videos that go along with them are good as well. My least favroite song would be her biggest hit 'criminal'. It is just to hip-hop sounding for my taste. P.S. Saw her perform live on her first tour to back 'tidal in 1997, it was awesome.

Fiona is a goddess of song. This is probably my least favorite album of Fiona’s, but her “worst” is most artist’s best.

absolutely beautiful 10/10. One of my favorite albums of all time so this may be biased, but Tidal seriously changed the way I looked at music. So brilliant and bare yet so sophisticated. Her lyricism is legendary and the instrumentals are so catchy! I frequently find myself singing these songs at home because of how they're always stuck in my head. An absolute gem, if you've never listened I highly recommend doing so

AMAZING ALBUM!!!!!. Itunes needs to fire the person who wrote this! You clearly know nothing of good music or talent! I have listened to this album countless times and it never gets old. If you are thinking of buying this album, look at the reviews and not itunes harsh, uneducated opinion! Just because they sell albums doesn't mean they know music!!

Fiona Apple is Brilliant. Tidal was probably one of the best albums that came out in the 90's. Fiona is so brilliant with her words even at a young age. When I was younger, I really didn't understand the meaning behind her lyrics so I didn't like her. Now when I listen to her songs, I ask myself how did I not love this? It's witty, wise, and beautiful.

Do Not Sleep On This One. Whomever wrote the review for this album needs a good smack across the face. I have purchased a hard copy of this album a total of three times and it never gets old. I was 12 years old when I first purchased this album after hearing 'The First Taste' and immediately fell in love. The really amazing thing about this album is that she was like 18 when it debuted and she wrote all her songs and she plays instruments. This album is not the fluff that litters today's airwaves. It's easy for some to dismiss here if they don't understand her and that's ok but please don't knock her talent. The only song that I stay away from is 'Sullen Girl' it's a beautifully written and arranged track but it never sat right with me because I already figured what it was about (she was unfortunately raped by a neighbor at a young age) this is a must have. This album has been on repeat since 1996 and I don't see that ever changing. That is the mark of a good album it just gets better with time and you can listen to it strait through.

Fantastic. The iTunes review is ridiculous. It's BECAUSE of HER compositions that people like this album. Goodness gracious. I didn't know she did all this, until reading that. Now I like this album even more. This is a great album, bringing us back to a time when you could start from the first song and listen through to the end. It's full bodied and well paced. I still can't get over the iTunes review. Her lyrics are phenomenal.

Love. Fiona is something else. This album is brilliant and extraordinary.

sometimes an artist pays for remaining true. seems as though Fiona is still paying for her no-compromise approach, which I highly respect. Hate to talk about the cliched 'selling out' syndrome, but it's true she never did and she still pays the price to this day apparently. What a myopic view Apple gives on such a great album.

A beautiful and haunting debut. Just to put things in perspective for a moment, Fiona was 18 years old when she wrote and recorded this album. Let's think about that for a moment. In a music world now filled with Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Jonas' Brothers, Fiona's feat seems even more remarkable. It's taken me over a decade to fully appreciate how quietly spectacular this album is and how it hasn't aged a day since it was released. It's so rich and rewarding in fact that I really don't mind that Fiona has released as much material as her contemporaries. I agree with other reviewers that the official Apple review needs to by rewritten, it's carelessly dismissive of this album.

Angsty 90’s teen. I would come home from middle school/high school and put this cd in my Sony Discman and pull the bed sheets over my head, and THAT is how life was dealt with “back in the day.”

College memories. This takes me back to college. What an amazing album. I truly love listening to it.

Great 90s album. If iTunes is still giving this album a bad rap, please disregard it. One of the best albums from the 90s generation.

must have. this is a classic record, the itunes reviewer is way off base with their B.S. opinion....Beats, melodies, lyrics, and Fiona's voice are on point to a singularity...

Stunning. Fiona Apple proves her worth as a modern songwriter on Tidal. Each song tugs at your heartstrings, with descriptions of love and heartache that soar in their complexity, and the album is overall very beautiful and impressive. Fiona's voice burns with anger and passion as she sings, and she shows a vulnerable side on this album that we can all relate to. This album is exactly why we love Fiona. Never is a Promise, Criminal, and Sleep to Dream are some of my favorites

What?!?! ITunes is CRAZY!. Fiona Apple is without a doubt the most influential singer/songwriter of this generation. The lyrics alone are incredible, let alone the musical expertise that she has. "Given the right material, such talents COULD HAVE FLOURISHED", what?!?! The right material is the fantastic material that spills from her brain. Are they comparing to the teeny bopper pop "musicians" that are out nowadays? I shudder to even look at the reviews for Justin Bieber and see what kind of crap they are spewing there. ITunes needs to re-evaluate their description, all the way around. What an insult to such a fabulous talent!

Fiona Apple. I remember working at a record store and having people come in to buy this album. As soon as they’d leave 10 more people would come in asking for it. The album sold out a couple of times because it.

Still amazing after all these years. This was the first concert I went to in high school... Oh 1996!! Loved it then and still love it now.

Wow Itunes. that is the rudest "review" of someones music I have ever read. I would like to see e writer of that "synopsis" record an album for it to get judged. thats just terrible!

This album showcases originality in it's rawest form. This album is truly unique because of Fiona's talent to take her emotions and create haunting poetic lyrics. I listened to this album and instantly became a fan. I have always loved sad songs but this album gave me more than just a calm melody with sullen lyrics. This album's strategic words and powerful piano helped me through some of the worst moments of my life. That's what great music does. I highly recommend this album and all of her other albums as well.

Under your skin. One of my top 50 albums of all time. The entire album just seeps under my skin with its raw emotion. If I could only pick one from this album, though, it'd be "Never is a Promise". I get mad chills whenever I hear it. Enjoy...

Who writes these reviews?. Sounds like sour grapes to me... One of the most intriguing albums I have ever heard, period. "Slow Like Honey" is still the sexiest song ever recorded. I just get it I guess.

Great Album. The iTunes review misses the mark. This album is good. Fiona's voice is gorgeous and real. The songs are fine.

Nothing like this album!. There is nothing like Fiona Apple's "Tidal." It is truly a modern day classic. Placed behind the jazziness of a piano, Apple's sultry lyrics and syrupy voice leap off of the speakers. I still can't believe she wrote and composed much of this at the age of 15/16! It takes truly advaced taste to appreciate this work of art.

Great. .

I-Tunes review got it right.. I completely agree with the I-Tunes review on this one. I just got done reviewing Extraordinary Machine and basically said the same thing. Her voice is amazing, but her songs and the way she performs them are boring and rambling. I can't seem to make myself care about or focus on what her lyrics are saying. That goes for both albums. I do like the instrumentals slightly better on this album than on Extraordinary Machine. Obviously the song Criminal is really good. She seems to do her best work when she performs sultry and sexy songs. I also feel she'd be better served by performing classic songs. In an age of washed up rockers doing American Songbook albums, I actually feel that Apple should try this route.

Her lyrical prowess is unparalled!. I was 17 when this album debuted, living in France, and trying to naviagate my way through the angst that is teenagehood, and this album was much needed respite from my troubles and confusion about where my life was going. I was taken aback by her lyrical sophistication and her raw musical talent then but completely blown away by them now, especially with each passing year. Ms. Apple is only three years older than I, and I continue to be impressed by the fact that such articulate wisdom came from the heart and mind of a then twenty year-old woman. This album is a must-have for any music collection and is so relatable on many levels. Now as a 33 year-old woman, with some heartache and experience under my belt, this album speaks to my heart in more ways than I ever thought it could at the age of 17.

Kill the Music Critic. The album description or review provided above this review is heartless and unfortunately so off. I believe Tidal as Fiona debut album, showed listeners that she is a true musician and her talent spawns past this critics poor articulation of what it actually means to be musically talent. As for this Album this has always been my favorite Apple album and will remain my favorite album until she recaptures this emotion and passion again in her voice and lyrics. Tilda hands down is a five star album. I would recommend that itunes post a new review because as you can see from the post following this one everyone feels differently from what was written in the album review. Fiona as a young artist in her teens was phenomenal. I love this album!!

A favorite and one of the greatest debut albums. I remember the first time I listened to this album. I was on my way to class and stopped by the record store and saw this cover at the listening station. I put the headphones on not knowing what to expect. I was completely in awe of Fiona’s raw emotion and passion. I listened to it on loop three times straight before I realized I had been standing there for hours and missed two of my classes. I was lucky enough to see her live in Tempe on her Tidal tour. One of the best concerts and albums I’ve ever experienced.

Very good album. It would be nice if more female artists made music like this.

Apogee and Perigee. Dear iTunes (r)eviewer, Surely by now you've become aware of the tremendous disparity between the jaded and presumptious opusculum you've let ferment atop this page and the unanimous display of approval and adoration that has been patiently accumulating, in silent mutiny, down here at the mezzanine. We the people, in and on behalf of the noetic glow worms, would like to submit a motion for the revoking of the aforementioned and ever moldy critique, the formal apology of its author to the underside of some soda fountain countertop (in the form of chewed gum), and the vindication--not to be slighted as mere retrofitting in light of Jon Brion's late approval--of iTunes' public opinion of said artist. And if you, decidedly lowercase "r" reviewer (to settle the debate above in the salutation), still have your job, and or haven't been stalked and bitten by Miss Apple herself, and or haven't yet offended the musical taste of a devoted reader of perhaps J.D. Salinger's uncollected short stories (and, consequently, been unable to receive paper mail for all the insurgent letters that have besieged your front porch), you should know that many of her, Fiona's, listeners are of the letter writing type and more than quite willing to wage postal war. Mere sciolism may afford you your current position, and perhaps one day you may yourself write a letter that will incite a friend or foe to pull over and examine a dead deer by the side of the road, but you assuredly cannot hope to ever convince me that before you wrote this review you actually listened to--not just heard--this album; that its silvery notes of music and lyrics were not compounded to the already heavily oxidized tissue in and around your cochlear nerve; and that iTunes reviewers don't tend to use dazzling vocabularies but not enough punctuation in their assaying of musical art. We, the people of the perigee, prefer to orbit much more closely to the Truth and would gladly receive you to our moon should you deign to fulfill your destiny. Our entreaty remains yours, truly. P.S. (((( ))))

best of the best. seriously itunes?? this album was a breakthrough in music in the year it was released. and the fact that it still holds up over 16 years.... wow.

God how I love this album. Never is a Promise…could there be another song out there that hits you so deep and means so much to so many…on so many different levels???….I don't really know if Fiona is singing about the horrors of the rape she survived as a young girl or something else but it is not often that an artist can weave a song that is so definitive to so many; It becomes the one song you need to hear when you are feeling down….I could go on to the other songs but this is the one that I always go for from this album first (although most of the others hit you almost as hard)..It surprises me that it is not the most downloaded one of the album………….Apples review of the Album is total junk, you can truly hear and feel the emotion and raw talent that is Fiona Apple in this album and in all the songs that are on it. I think that if you didn't know Fiona before hearing it you would after, she puts her very essence and soul into these songs

Slow Like Honey is a classic.. I am sad that the main review for this music is negative. I wouldn't want someone to be put off from buying/listening to this music based on the itunes review. Not for everyone, but I freaking love it. This is beautiful, complex, unique art. Slow like honey is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. The singing is so honest and raw, gut wrenching. One of my favorites.

Don't trust that review. Wow that iTunes review is completely off. The songwriting is phenomenal and is no way "settling for cliches."

Amazing. Never Is A Promise and Sullen Girl!

The I-tunes Review of this album is SO WRONG!!!. This is a great album. Not a sing song ever gets skipped on this one for me. Beautiful voice, emotional lyrics, wonderful music. One of my favorite albums of the 90s. The 5star ratings is your first clue as to how good this one really is. Never is a Promise is simply amazing.
