Epic Dead. Hard to express how coherent and well-performed this show was. Those lucky persons who got to see this LIVE must have been blown away! Did they suspect they were in for a night of incredible music? I think this is the best Dead show of all.
Everybody Just Relax Man We Have You All Night Long. Absolute Classic! If you do not own this, buy it NOW. Nothing else to say.
Not your Normal DEAD!. Wow! Almost equivalent to 2 different shows rolled into one. Love the acoustic (showcasing pure genius) leading into some of the best Electric DEAD I have ever heard! Worthy of any collection, especially those just getting into the DEAD!!!!
From bootleg to digital. Back when I was purchasing vinyl more often than I probably should have, I came across a local comic book store that would house anonymous bootleg recordings of the Dead. These were often a gamble because you never really knew the quality of what you’d get in either the performance or the recording quality. Anyway, one that I purchased and loved for years was a bootleg version of the acoustic portion of this show. Fast forward to listening to this volume of Dicks Picks, and I have the OMG moment! I’ve heard this before on a bootleg copy from back in the day! This is why I’m so fond of this volume!
Classic GD. The top of their game as they end one era and slowly start moving into another...
Awesome. Thank God for L. Whoo hoo, everythings a little strange still.
WHAT AN ALBUM!!!. THIS IS THE DEAD THAT SHOULD BE PRESERVED FOREVER! From song 1 till the end a classic piece of american music. One of the best Dick's Pick's out there!
❤️. ❤️
Interesting. As everyone is pointing out, this is an interesting show in being half acoustic. In the acoustic half it’s like the “Bluegrass Dead.” So feels quirky but worthwhile. The rare “Crystal Envelopment” parts 1 & 2 is my fav. Also a really good St Stephen.
HALF ACOUSTIC, BUILDING UP TO 2 ELECTRIC SETS. Dicks pick # 8 is unique for it's half acoustic show, considered by many as their best live recording. The band lineup includes Pig Pen and Mickey Hart. This original three cd set starts with acoustic folk covers and material from American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. You can't help but wanting to sing along, as these versions have good crowd participation and are beautifully done. It changes into two electric sets around "The Cryptical Envelopment" which leads into an awesome version of "Cosmic Charlie". The song "Viola Lee Blues" is one of the best versions out there. Defiantly an essential recording.
Volume 8. Explains the Dead. Live. Ambitious. Clever. Young. Acoustic/Electric.
A Bonafide Classic. Here we are. this, along with dicks picks vol. 4, are quite possibly the best picks ever, both hailing from the great year of 1970. a very unique one, simply because of a classic and rare 1st set acoustic performance that is some of the best dead around. this is definaly a show to turn on folks who have never heard the band live before. and there are some rare performances, too, don't ease me in, cold jordan, (one of my favs) and deep elem. then what happens? the dead come back out for imho, an even stronger electric 2nd set with some astounding jamming, particularly during the other one, good lovin' and viola lee blues. viola is one of the last great ones, folks, for they never played it again as far as i know after the early '70s. it SMOKES. other not-to-be-missed highlites: st. stephen, am dew, man's world, and sweet acoustic versions of cumberland and i know you rider.
THIS ONE IS THE BEST.... I have hundreds (literally) of quality bootleg & straight Dead shows. May of ‘77 seems to be the apex of the band, though I am sure many would (gently) argue with that. But...for my money, this show is the best. Not just the music, but the back-and-forth GOOD vibes between the band and the audience; it comes right through the speakers how GOOD everyone feels...not just verbally, but just...that...feeling. You can tell the band is having a good time, and they are digging the audience - (obviously) visa versa. The band matured musically from 1970 onwards, but this one is one that you’ll play over and over and over, always picking up new stuff - enjoy!
