A new dawn unveiled for David Tibet…. Fans of Current 93 in the early ‘90s were an unusual set, an academic bunch of ex-goths and rivethead record collectors who longed for something of a higher brow to feed their minds without abandoning the dark, rudimentary experimentalism to which they’d grown accustomed in their somewhat over-developed tastes. At this point, there was no “freak folk” scene; in fact, the direction that David Tibet and his band of “menstrual minstrels” had forged with Swastikas for Noddy and Earth Covers Earth over the previous years seemed like a strange diversion that was bound to end—just another phase in Tibet’s soul-searching that he had imbibed with hippie nostalgia from when he was a boy. Then, along came the double-album Thunder Perfect Mind, Tibet’s undisputed masterpiece; the naysayers were shushed, tentative folk fans were won over, and the “post-industrial” phase of Current 93 was effectively closed. What makes the record especially unique is that it sits upon the peak of both arcs of Tibet’s career, as a culmination of his journeyman ‘80s work and as a manifesto for everything that has come since. No matter from which direction you reach this record, forward or backward, whether a fan of Genesis P-Orridge or Will Oldham, there is something here for you. Tibet’s most literate and straightforwardly emotional lyrics by that point are perfectly matched by a variety of guest vocalists, including some of Rose McDowall’s prettiest work, as well as phenomenal musicianship from the band, especially Joolie Wood (violin), James Malindaine-Lafayette (harp), and Michael Cashmore (guitar). And as always, the fundamental live feel of the recordings is enhanced by Steven Stapleton’s edgy production, at once sinister, psychedelic, and beautiful, offering a little something to the old school fans who need a little noise amongst the melody. I highly recommend: “A Song for Douglas After He’s Dead,” a moving (but somewhat chiding) tribute to Death in June’s Douglas P., who makes his last contributions to Current 93 here; “A Lament for My Suzanne,” which props up pretty melancholy with a gloriously haunting backdrop; “All the Stars Are Dead Now,” a striking and maddening epic rant that gradually decays with delay effects; and “Hitler as Kalki,” in which the Bevis Frond’s guitar wizard Nick Saloman turns Current 93 into a writhing, hypnotic prog reptile. As a bonus for longtime fans, this modern reissue of Thunder Perfect Mind boasts warmer, clearer sound that both budget and technology could not allow back in 1992, as well as a wealth of wonderful outtakes (e.g. “They Return to Their Earth”) originally found on the early, out-of-print anthology Emblems, and a handful of performances from the long-lost live record, As the World Disappears.

Constellations.... Can I give this 6 stars? 7? A constellation? A universe? If you don’t own any C93, this is the one to start with. And if you do own any other C93—a lot (like me) or just a little—this is the one to end on. “Swastikas" comes close, and I have a soft spot for “Earth Covers Earth.” But “Thunder Perfect Mind” will always be the superlative one.

Current 93 at its best. This is some of the best work from David Tibet and friends. If you enjoy other works by David Tibet / Current 93 or are a fan of Death In June / Sol Invictus / Nurse With Wound family then this is a must!
