Baroness Deserve to Be Heard. Baroness have created one of the finest hard rock albums of the decade. Now, one note: this isn't a "metal" album. It's certainly not another Blue Record (recommended listening from Baroness before you pick this one up), although it does retain some of the left-field aesthetic of that album. If you're coming in expecting pummeling double kick and vocal-shredding howls, this isn't for you. With that in mind, Gold and Grey stands head and shoulders above most of today's hard rock. The band displays a fine craftsmanship in their songwriting and performance. From the sheer passion of "Seasons" to the syncopated transition from "Tourniquet" to "Anchor's Lament," this is a highly rewarding listen. One step further, however, lies in the production. While many listeners immediately found reproach in the heavily distorted, crunchy sound of the album, I found it to be a daring artistic statement. Baroness don't conform to the norm; nothing here is clean or perfect, but Baroness also don't sacrifice dynamic range for the intensity of the production. Several very well done instrumental interludes throughout (namely, "Blankets of Ash") ensure that the entire album isn't jacked up to eleven. Also, while the distortion does obscure the drums and other components quite a bit, it brings the vocals to the forefront. It grants Gold and Grey a highly melodic quality which so much hard rock and metal music lacks. That’s why it’s such a point of contention between the average listeners and those seeking a more daring display of artistry. The production can be distracting at first, but in my book and after giving the album several listeners it's a definite pro. Gold and Grey isn’t revolutionary. It probably won’t change the face of rock music. But it still stands as one of the finest displays of creativity from that genre in recent years, and as such deserves to be heard by anyone who follows hard rock. This is fine art. Challenge yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Audio version of a black and white photo?. UPDATE: 6/14/19 Full album review. Excellent!! I’ll stick by my opinions based on the first three songs below. The sound qualities gives me the impression of an artistic photo... not black and white as I described below, but more of a subtle sepia sound color tone, very consistent with the gold and gray title. Outstanding! Am I hearing colors??? Wow!?! Great work of art here guys!! Five star for sure. I won’t be surprised if this ends up being my favorite Baroness album... time will tell. I wish I had music recording training to know how to describe this, but "something" is missing in the sound. Other reviewers say produciton is bad, and I guess I have to agree. Sounds like a demo tape? Flat? I just don't have the vocabulary. On the bright side, the song writing is brilliant as always, and that cover art, WOW!!. And maybe the sound is supposed to be that way, you know, kinda gold and gray instead of bright orange? Black and white photography is an artistic thing. Hmm. I'll give 5 stars anticipating I'll appreciate the muted sounds when I listen in context of the full album.

Meh.... Don't understand how this is in Metal category or hard rock for that matter....sounds like weak alternative to my ears. And the production is terrible . Meh.....I just dont get it at all.

Cmon. Yes, the music is good, but the production is absolute garbage. Anyone who says that they prefer this type of production, or that they “don’t care” that it sounds awful because “low fi is part of their charm,” not only need their ears checked, but their heads as well. A certain “reviewer” acting pretentious about legitimate criticism is part of the overwhelming minority who are enlightened enough to prefer appalling sound fidelity. I guess the rest of us commoners just don’t understand how TERRIBLE production enhances the listening experience. It would actually be nice to hear all of the great things happening with the instruments, instead of hearing severe sound compression that makes speakers sound like they are going to fall apart. It’s absolutely idiotic to make a conscious decision to destroy the quality of your music through intentionally poor production. It has ruined a few of their albums for me, so I’m a hard pass on this one unless it is re-recorded.

Production is terrible/the rest is pretty good. The production on this is flat out awful. Purple sufferd a bit from the same problem. It sounds like everything is peaking out and most of the sound has a layer of fuzz on it. I had written an early review so here's my thoughts after multiple listenings: This contains some very cool writing and ideas. I think it's more like Yellow & Green than any other album in thier past. It contains some really great guitar playing and Gina Gleason fits in as a fine addition to the band. I would highly reccomend getting it if you are a Baroness fan, just be ready to be disappointed by the production. Ths sad thing is, that the better the sound system you play it on, the worse it sounds.
