Bach. I love Bach. And I love Yo Yo Ma. I just hope this isn't another repeat of "Bach's Greatest Hits" by Yo Yo Ma that has the same music on it that we've heard over and over by Mr Ma.

Third Rendition. The 80’s version is still my favorite. I respect Yo-Yo Ma for putting out the third out-put this music, is so incredibly beautiful and important to him, that he has felt the need to put out a third and final recording. I salute the effort. We now have the unique opportunity to hear an artist take on a magnificent body of work three different times in the span of his life. The young man in the 1980s and now the seasoned musician with worldwide claim provides a third and final offering. BACH’s Cello Suites in some of the most beautiful and important music in western civilization.

Yo-Yo Ma’s last and greatest Bach Cello Suites. This is a definitive recording in a crowded and highly competitive field for the greatest music written for cello. I am a big fan of Yo-Yo Ma and his advocacy for classical music as well as cultural exchange. His previous two recordings of this work had not measured up to the greats, like Steven Isserlis’ performance. The first was technically immaculate if a touch impersonal. His second was more evolved but some of the choices seemed mannered and not quite a congealed into a flowing new perspective on the piece. After living with the music for many decades and performing these works all over the world, Ma creates a masterful recording that rivals the very best. You can tell this music is in his bones, his heart and head united and fully committed to conveying every emotion and color. This isn’t concerned with being historically informed or tied to any performance practice except how Ma personally connects to the music, giving us direct, honest, individualistic playing from a master artist at the height of his creative prowess. Fans of any music, Ma, and Bach should listen to this without reservation no matter how many recordings of the Cello Suites you already own. This is an important recording and the greatest classical recording I have heard this year.

Breathing!. I love this virtuoso, and looked forward to his playing Bach on cello. However, the breathing of the artist is so pronounced that it overshadows the excellent playing. I tried to relax listening to this, but found the breathing so disturning that I am askig for my money back. I hope a recording will be done that captures the cello without the artist's belabored breathing.
