Amazing. Garl Clark jr is an amazing new artist about to break through. You saved me, soul, and bright lights are my favorite songs. He has great 60s vibes and blues. Can't wait to hear more!

Gary Clark Jr. is awesome, this record is overproduced. Like other reviewers have said, Gary Clark Jr. is incredible. If you haven’t seen him live, do it! The sound is a little too “smooth” on most tracks on this album - so crank it up real, real loud until you get some distortion and imagine you’re at an outdoor festival with the sweet aroma of herb in the air.

Blak nd Blu. My hat goes off to Gary Clark Jr. because he did it up! His song Things are Changin' OMG I play it ALL the time! Lol good work! :)

Trying To Get Comfortable. To be honest, I've only heard of Gary Clark Jr. in the last few days, and what I have heard is out of this world, so naturally I had to check out his album. What I found was a guy with some serious talent trying his hand in all different corners of music. And sometimes that's a good thing. This album gives me the sense that Gary isn't quite at hime with the genre that he's done, so he's trying his hand at other stuff, and seeing what works for him. I applaud him for this and I think it's a great idea to stick your neck out like that. He's got some really good things coming his way, and I wish all the best for him. As for the album itself, it's a mixed bag. Some songs are amazing, such as Numb and Next Door Neighbor Blues, but others really aren't up to snuff. I would reccomend demoing all of the songs and seeing which ones you like, then downloading them individually. I don't think the album as a whole is worth your purchase, but some songs on said album are incredible and should be downloaded right now.

Modern Blues. A masterstroke of an album, cutting edge modern sound - deep in the blues-rock tradition. Gary isn’t some slick silky player, he’s all soul and tradition. Songs such as When My Train Pulls In, Bright Lights, Numb, You Saved Me, Please Come Home and the pop hit Ain’t Messin ‘Round are all stellar songs. The rest, for me anyway are near-misses aimed at soul and rhythm & blues - decent attempts and not without merit, but not as satisfying. If you like the soul angle – it’s more effective in The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. It’s an uneven package, but when it’s good, it’s really good. Don't miss out.

Brilliant...just brilliant. This man is incredible -- this is an eclectic and fascinating collection of songs. To be sure, they are not organized in a consistent and predictable way. But this is what I loved about it. Each was a surprise, and I couldn't wait to hear the next. Gary, I am a total fan!

Whole album is good. Only a few tracks i skip. Deserves a solid 4 stars. Cant wait for next album.

This is for you G. Bring the best blues. Man this guy here is bringing the blues to this era of time I haven't heard blues like this since well ... It's been awhile long while.

Best album of 2013 and it came out in 2012!. Just mind blow mix of all genres!! What an incredible piece of art! I love it.... Don't change and don't let people try to pigeon hole you into a certain style of music!!!!

Beautifully diverse. I recently (sometime in the last 2 months) was exposed to Gary Clark Jr. by a friend of mine who loves the guitar. I became instantly hooked on Numb and When My Train Pulls In. This album felt like an ode to other greats in the past… I love the diversity! I loved it so much, I bought tickets to see him live at The Wiltern (I hadn't been to a concert in 3 yrs.). He sounds even better live! Other favs, "You Saved Me" (reminded me of Prince), "Next Door Neighbor Blues", "Bright Lights", "Things are Changing" and of course his rendition of "Third Stone From the Sun/If You Love Me Like You Say You Do"...

Phenomenal!. A great display of Clark's many talents. He is thoroughly engaging and the variety makes the album a huge hit in my opinion. He is so incredibly talented- I am glad he chose to give us this opportunity to hear his many talents. You must get the full version because "Soul" is just plain beautiful.

Electric blues/rock. Mr. Clark, My unsolicited advice is to focus your talents towards the electric blues/rock in which you excel.

Put it on repeat!!. Love the diversity of the album, but most of all the funky dingy guitar solos. Keep rockin and representin the ATX

Gary 'F-ing' Clark Jr. !!. Woulda given 6-stars

Doesn't live up to his potential. The Bright Lights EP is great. A whole LP of that style and caliber would have been fantastic. Alas, this album is only about half-way there, with the rest of the tracks being pop filler.

Dan Auerbach?. I like this guy, I really do...I honestly thought I was listening to Dan Auerbach or a new Black Keys album, though. They sound very very similar. Either way the album has some good tunes.

Just buy it.. Amazing album, by an amazing artist.

AINT MESSIN 'ROUND😏😏😏😏😏😏😏. ✨Top shelf amazing.✨

The Industry is holding him back. I am a big rock and roll fan. I love the Foo Fighters, and I like dabbling in the blues and jazz a little bit too (in being rounded in a few different genres I learned a lot about music). I recently watched the Foo Fighters Sonic Highways tv episode featuring Gary Clark Jr, and I was instantly hooked. He talked about how he was heavily influenced by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and ripped out crazy blues solos on his guitar, just like Stevie. Gary Clark Jr is a hidden gem with loads of natural talent, but he's young, and I think this album is evidence that the Industry is taking advantage of his youth and pushing him around, making him sing some R&B as well. Gary Clark Jr is not a R&B guy. I never saw any type of R&B from him on Sonic Highways, which leads me to believe that under the protection of somebody like Dave Grohl, who is very established in music, he can say and do what he wants. I love Gary Clark Jr. I'm hooked on him, and once he gets a little older and a little wiser, and rises through the ranks of the Industry, he'll learn not to be pushed around and he'll break out to almost the level of Buddy Guy or Ray Charles. Keep an eye on him.

Good Stuff!. B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Joss Stone, now I'll add Gary Clark Jr. love this album!

Breath of classic air. Bringing old blues rock back

Unoriginal. This guy sounds like he's imitating his favorite artists. The song "numb" brought me to buy it and now i feel like i should've just bought the single.

🎸. I wonder if they even count my reviews?

Regurgitation of licks and styles from other artists. This album was disappointing. There are too many direct rip-offs of classic guitar riffs (which can pass if they are NOT the main riff) and trendy tones from the Black Keys without ANY decent songs to back them up. He has a nice quality to his voice but one song he literally sings the same note through the whole chorus! I rolled my eyes through the entire thing. I wanted to like it, but wasted my money.

Finally!. We taking our music back!

really good music. gary blends black keys rock with a little jimi and a lot of soul. he has some straight up blues rock on here as well as some soul, you can even see some hip hop influences thrown in there. very impressed

Throwdown or Blues Pop?. Mr Clark is as pedigree as they come and don’t let the iTunes mastered mainstream stink create a doubt. Mr Clark knows dirty and he’s throwing it down. Righteous blues rock and roll needs little explanation. Does it hit you in the hip? And on a sultry summer night?

The potential is there.. This album has the potential to be the soulful, crunchy, riffy, blues rock album that i expected it to be, but it is highly overproduced and has some questionable R&B/Pop songs like songs 3, 6, 9, 12 that just flat out do not belong! Stick with what got you here! and that would be songs like "Numb" and "Third stone from the sun." "When my train pulls in is good too. Those are the 3 best songs in my opinion.

GCJ is the next best thing!. GCJ is going to blow up as soon as more people hear him and he records more music. His talent is unlike any other artist out right now. How do more people not know about him?

Blak and Blu. Awesome. That's all.

Still Got It !!. Glad to see there is still some genuine rock out there, great guitar licks and sounds great, Happy to see alternative still has to compete with incredible Rock n Roll!

My view. Love the album. Love the diversity. Gary can cover a lot of bases. Afterwards had the opportunity to see him live. As much as I liked the album he blew me away live.

I've spent $10 on worse things. Hendrix? Ha, no. Yup he's black & yes he plays guitar. But your way way way off if that's who you think he compares to. Good music but that comparison is asinine. Again good musician, but not even in the same atmosphere of the best guitarist to grace the planet. Sorry.

Pleasantly Surprised. I like the record. Good young talent

GCJ Rocks the world!. I heard this album first over at a buddies house and immediately my ears perked. This guy is top shelf, and deserves the credit due. I'm going to see him in Tokyo next month, flying there for what will hopefully be one of many future live shows I attend of his. Amazing artist.

Great Album!. I really like this album!

Pick a genre, Gary. I get that he has many musical influences being that he's from Austin, TX but it's a tad annoying jumping from crunchy blues rock riffs to smooth R&B. It throws off the flow of listening and the flow of the album. Songs like Numb, When My Train Pulls In, and Bright Lights are nitty gritty blues with a guitar style derivative of Jimi Hendrix while other songs like the title track and The Life are smoother, more R&B and soul. Not really sure why he chose to feature both on the same album. He should stick to the blues because he sounds better as a bluesman but I know he won't because no one makes money playing the blues anymore. Either way, pick a genre, Gary. I need to start streaming new albums on YouTube before buying because this was a wasted purchase

Nice voice and guitar but it's been done. I saw Gary Clark Jr. on tv and the live performance was awesome. He still has the same voice and guitar talent on the album but it lacks originality. The hooks and outstanding riffs remind me of other songs - and not enough to make me say he "reinvtented" them. Sorry to say because he seems cool.

By far the best album in years.. @---< = guitar :)

Revival of good music. I never heard of Gary Clark Jr. until I saw him perform on Austin City Limits. He was amazing and did remind me of Hendrix. Please don't get me wrong hrs not the next Jimi. But his sound is reminiscent if him.

Awesome. Awesome

Very Unfocused Album. Never heard of this guy until I saw him perform When My Train Pulls In on Leno last night. Awesome song with great guitar. So different from most modern pop trash. Much to my disappointment most of the rest of the album sounds like the record company forced him to play R&B pop to help sales. Clark is the best guitarist I've heard in years. I hope someday he's given the chance to be himself.

AMAZING. Heard him on my Pandora station and been in love ever since! Great that he reps Texas cause the sound couldn't be any better. Love the different style and multiple style that he has, all which I love when it comes to music. Can't wait to catch him in concert one day.

3rd gen Hendrix. Hendrix begat Kravitz begat Gary Clark Jr? Maybe, idk; he's got skill and style, but this album . . . feels like frustrated potential. His band doesn't help. Sounds like a studio rhythm section who doesn't really like the music theiy're playing. That, combined with sometimes overly lush production, makes it seem inauthentic. Too bad, because I want to like it.

amazing. My faith has been restored!

Crapola. Don't waste your money on this trash

Very Disappointed. I love Gary Clark Jr but the folks over at Warner's Bros production studios really blew it. Get the iTunes Session album instead to hear recorded tracks that capture (as best they can) Gary's scintillating raw sound and ripping guitar riffs.

Holy Wow! The Next Big Thing Since SRV/Hendrix. Yeah. I know! Just listen. Anyone giving less than 4 stars is a fool.

Sounds like Musiq Soulchild with a guitar. Great stuff! Just caught his performance on Arsenio Hall and I'm hooked.

If I only bought this record for two songs.... "You Saved Me" and of course "Bright Lights.." made it 100% worthwhile. The rest of the album is a bit all over the place, but I appreciate that a lot. You just don't know what's coming next. Blasting this through my KRK E8T's is pure heaven at 4am. wow. just wow.
