Are you Kidding this is awesome.. Shane MacGowan and The Pogues are the most over looked band of the 20th century. The album is worth every penny.
Rescue Me. Heard it on the season finale of Rescue Me. Had to download it!
It's a No-Brainer. The Pogues are an excellent band and with a low low price tag of just 7.99 for 21 songs(!) - it's a no-brainer.
Every single song is good. These guys have the rare ability to go from a lilting melancholy melody to a raucous, catchy drinking tune, and in the case of Fairytale of New York all in the the same song. The lyrics are gritty, but in more than a few cases also incredibly clever and occasionally hilarious. Almost all of the melodies are well constructed and interesting in a unique celtic/punk/folk way, and there's just something about the songs that make them irresistable.
The Pogues! irish legends. I love the pogues, shane ahhh i love his voice! I'm of Irish Descent but I live in Southern, California I love irish music
~FairyTale Of New York

Great Disc!!!. It's worth buying the whole thing. Bought it in Ireland and it gets you in the ol' Irish mood.
Best of the Best of. I normally avoid 'Best of' albums like the proverbial, mainly because whoever compiles them has a totally different idea of what the 'Best of' is than I do - "if in doubt, pick those that sold the most" seems to be the usual motivation (which is how we end up with Maggie May on every Best Of Rod the Mod album - dreadful song but it sold lots of copies). But for once it seems that the powers that be have got it right - a terrific collection of songs by the best Irish band ever (stuff U2 & Onob sell-outs).
Great band. Good start.. As much as I like all of these individual songs and this Pogues compilation in general, I think that an audience new to the Pogues could do better by purchasing the classic If I Should Fall from Grace with God, which has some of the best songs here (Fiesta, Fairytale of New York, If I Should Fall from Grace with God) and simply has a better flow as an album, by which I mean an irresistable and thoughtfully conceived order of madness and lullaby, which is part of their signature sound (it's a bit like later Tom Waits, but with traditional Irish instruments instead of scrap metal and accordions.). Obviously, the people who put this collection together thought about this (and to some degree succeeded), but I still think If I Should Fall is the way to go. Trust me, it's a near masterpiece. They were really one of the great bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s (not just Irish bands) and when I was an American living in York in 1991, I would go to an Irish pub in Micklegate called, at that time, The Acorn, for their open-mic. You could not overestimate the influence the Pogues had on the people in the know and the music scene in general there. I wish I had recorded some of those bands and singers, but oh well. Riotous and heart-wrenching, the Pogues are not to be missed.
I have a better idea. I love the Pogues. This is a fair best-of, but I would like to propose an alternative. If you want a true best-of-Pogues comp, simply dump all of the blazing Roses and brilliant Rum together, add "Fairytale," and you're done. Absolutely no need for the inferior later tracks scattered through here.
Bought this as I was touring Ireland. ...and it fit the setting perfectly! This is the true Irish punk, not as mainsteam as Dropkick Murphys but just as good maybe better. I really like A Pair of Brown Eyes, Steams of Whiskey, and Fiesta.
Summer in Siam?. It's the worst song ever! How did it make this comp?
Love It. I am an Irish Dancer so I've got to love Irish stuff
YEEAAH!. I first heard the pogues when watching the wire. "Body of an American" is still my favorite :)
Buy it!!!. Irish folk music doesn't get any better. This album reminds you of a simpler time. A must have.
Fall from the Grace of God. Thank God for car commercials! I discovered The Pogues while I was stationed in Edzel, Scotland. Forgot how much I loved their music!!!
I'm really sorry.... I'm really sorry but I just can't listen to this its really not my type.
Outstanding Music. Outstanding Value.. One of the best bands of the 1980's... and one of the best contemporary Irish bands ever (second only to U2). You need to listen to this amazing mix of punk, Celtic, and dirty ol' rock and roll.
The Very Best of The Pogues. These guys have a great up tempo original sound. If your looking for mellow look elsewhere. I stumbled on to them and have enjoyed their use of an array of instruments.Just take a test listen you'll see. Fiesta is great as well as The sunnyside of the Street.
AWESOME. Period.. Do not hesitate to purchase this. Just about every song is a CLASSIC. Along with anything by the Donegal X-Press, this will make for a GREAT St. Patrick's Day soundtrack!
