Beautiful playing but….. I swear I can hear him humming along to the music. It’s quite distracting. This is the second album of the Well Tempered Clavier I’ve purchased. The first was bad quality despite its “digital remastering.” Please listen through and listen to the background of the music. I just might have to find another copy less distracting!

Must have in any classical music collection. no one, and I mean NO ONE, will ever play J.S. Bach like Glenn Gould. Any decent collection of classical music should include Gould's take on Bach's English and French suites, as well as the Well Tempered Clavier. Absolute necessities.

I hate this — but it’s good. I hate Glen Gould’s interpretation of J. S. Bach’s The Well Tempered Clavier. But, Gould was a genius and his recordings are worth hearing. Gould plays without any sense of lyricism, it is a cold, analytical display — but technically correct. I personally dislike that he plays on the piano rather than the harpsichord — but that is a matter of taste and preference. I dislike the fact that you can sometimes hear him humming along — and this, in spite of his distain for all romanticism. Gould was a strange guy and I really don’t like him — but he was also a genius at the keyboard. He really did play like no one else. It’s worth hearing. You may even like it — I’m told some people do.

Gould/Bach. Yes, Gould is humming and mumbling. Yes, Gould is the greatest Bach interpreter. When you mix these facts together, you get a reminder that it takes a passion filled human to bring these notes back to life. Not a machine. It is a great pleasure to listen to this collection.
