A few really good tracks. This record features a number of (then) up-and-coming singers, most notably Norah Jones and Jess Klein. Their tracks are great (while Malick's guitar playing is only passable). After five years or so of having this in my collection, I still return to a number of the tracks found here. I like best: Immigrant, Chance & Circumstance, Midsize City Girl, Deceptively Yours, and Heart of Mine.
Honestly, I think this is a terrific album, for being real. It isn't chopped and channelled like its offspring, New York City; and so it shows Norah Jones herself all the better. Often times, the reality is much better than any narrow, targeted hype that could be made. The other voices present here make the breadth, the interest, and it is very good to have them. Real music, as you might find it on a night in a great club. Peter Malick in fact plays wonderfully, giving atmosphere and strength to the proceedings at the same time as staying firmly in position so that the vocalists always can present in front. This is professional, and you appreciate it when you hear his measured expression, within this mission. I like hearing Mercy Malick, along with the other young singers. She's a very talented young lady, possibly a little ahead of herself in the material here -- but maybe we will hear more in the proper time, as her own range of experiences builds for its own expression. Appreciating so gives the underline to the way that among all the other voices and the capabilities in the band, Norah Jones shimmers and shines, lives so many moments of fine intensity. This is a particular kind of talent, and I am very glad by this album to have a chance to really appreciate it of her; to recognize how it has been there from these beginnings. Norah has since shown herself to work much with variation, and with others. That's what this album does, compared to the earlier commercially cut-down version, and so it really gains. To be enjoyed.
midsize city girl. i don't have the entire album, just "midsize city girl," but that song is achingly beautiful.
