From an era by-gone. Better than the last disc, this recording suffers some from what this reviewer will call the 'mid-tempos'- never breaking out or gaining energy or momentum. 9 mid-to-slow tempo songs along with two over 112 bpm don't showcase enough variety or detail to warrant a second listen. Some turns of phrase are clever, but without the detail one would get from a Waylon or Willie. Ambiguity comes to bear on 'Memories Cost A Lot'- which never really describes why memories do cost a lot. Is the lyric "Memories cost a lot when you don't make none" supposed to mean you have to buy them? Don't we all have memories that were free? Further do the lyrics "When you lose your family son and you can't replace them" mean you can't buy a new family and therefore memories are 'priceless' or you can't make memories when you don't have a family? Are your only memories or ones worth keeping derived from family-only? We get two cryptic verses and no explanation which is not enough to be relatable. No timeless songwriter would have been so cryptic. Is this reviewer supposed to search their soul and find something to connect with here? The song fades after solo so one never does find out what Whitey meant. As an independent recording, lack of A & R has much to do with that- likewise, with no publishing deal in the wings, the publisher couldn't weigh in on that lyric and the band are left to their own devices. There's something exceptionally measured and conservative here which almost sounds as if the band are watching each other and trying to stay in 'character'. If they are doing the throw-back thing- creating a new term 'Outlaw' country, then there's just nothing especially dangerous in the mix, just sort of the mid-tempo blahs.
King of country. You will love this album !!!
Classic sounding honky tonk. This is a straight up country record, with no frills, gloss or overproduction. Whitey Morgan is doing nothing new here, and that is what makes this album great, Whitey doesn't have the punk rock attitude that Hank III does, but much like Hank III he is very rooted in the past. Where Hank III obviously comes from the Hank Williams side of country, Whitey Morgan wears his Waylon influence very strong. This is hard country, that sounds like an outlaw from the seventies, once again Bloodshot has found a great artist that carries the country torch strong.
Whitey morgan album. This album is flipping awesome!!! I personally like Hardscratch Pride. Whitey does an excellent job keeping real country going. I thought Honkey tonks and cheap motels would be a hard album to top, but this album does. The sky is the limit. You can listen to the whole cd, every song is good. If you like waylon, get this album.
Country Music Lives. This is country music in its purest form. If you want an album that brings you powerful story telling, idyllic bass rhythms and the crunch of a lead guitar then this is it. Whitey and the boys have provided country music listeners with a taste of what it use to be like, when country music was about emotion, hard truths and feeling, not trying to outline what makes you a redneck. While artists today may think they are on top, there is a group of rowdy boys from the Midwest quietly taking over with force and truth.
