Amazing, No Questions. I hate bluegrass. Honestly, I do. I can't stand the twangy, keening lyrics or backwoods instrumentation. That all being said, the men of Punch Brothers are musical virtuosos, experts on their instruments, and musically gifted performers. Their songs come off less as country-themed, and more like a hybrid of folk with progressive rock structures, unusual time signatures, and rapidly shifting dynamics. Standout tracks are the popular "Rye Whiskey," the most typical sounding song on this album, and my personal favorite "Don't Need No," a strange song that combines a barroom stomping melody with climbing, key-signature defying chords.

An aural treat. I got to hear the Punch Bros. in Boulder a few months ago, when the still hadn't decided on titles for some of the pieces for this recording. They were a stunning ensemble. The change of musical textures and key centers here reminds me of the work King Crimson has been doing since the early 1980s. (Yes, you can compare where they go in those terms. Yes, the instrumentation and overall sound of the two bands is very different, but not so much the changes in texture and keys.) The Punch Brothers make it more intimate and gentle with those changes and lets us hear their agile, sensitive songwriting. Nothing like good ol' bluegrass to get us back on the ground, too!

total crap!. I bought this because it made the top ten bluegrass album of the year. I wish I could get my money back! Unless you like new age not grass stay away from this one.

I mean... if you really like this kinda stuff.. I suppose this album is alright. If you're into groundbreaking ideas of musical form and chordal structure coupled with ingenious and surprisingly compatible genres of music. If you enjoy the same old hum-drum shallow minded simple music than this album is not for you. I guess you should only buy this album if you want something new and fresh to listen to that doesn't get old and can riddle your body with those pesky goosebumps. If thats not what you are looking for. Then I'd go somewhere else.
