I have no idea what BwayGirl is saying but.... Antonio Banderes can mispronounce anything and still be sexy as hell. My first musical I ever saw live was evita and it was in Washington dc (at the Warner theater). This musical is truely amazing but having performed in this musical years later and listening to many different variations of the songs, I find that the madonna version is much better quality recording than the 79 album (obviously since they were done so far apart) and I thought that Antonio Banderes did an excellent job with his role (plus that sexy voice of his and his good looks didn't hurt either).

Madonna and Bandares are Rainbow High. I will admit to be introduced to Evita through this movie and soundtrack so it is my preferred primer. But I have a copy also of the original 1979 cast recording. While LuPone is a stronger vocalist by far, I prefer the film soundtrack for many reasons. Antonio Banderas' Che is excellent. This version also includes "The Lady's got Potential" which is simply stunning. This is Madonna's best work, singing and acting. I believed her as Evita...and her singing is less forced or stagey than LuPone. This Evita is human, flawed and terrific, and if the theatre training is missing with M, the emotion of the story is certainly not. Hello and Goodbye, Che and Eva's Waltz, and Another Suitcase and Another Hall are stronger here. I do give the nod to LuPone for the signature Don't Cry for Me...but M does an admirable job. A true Evita fan will own all versions, and this especially for the two new songs.

Solid film recording. The first Evita album I ever heard was actually the '76 concept album, and many of those performances remain near and dear even now. Julie Covington is my favorite Evita. Patti LuPone has some mad talent, but I don't like her extremely dramatic interpretations. *ducks rotten tomatoes* She's still better than Madonna, though, and she is the primary reason I don't enjoy this as much as I'd like to. I saw the film back when it came out, and Madonna looked the part; she could do both street urchin and first lady pretty well, and watching her glam '40s attire tended to distract me from her incredibly weak vocals. Now that there are no visuals, it's even more glaringly obvious, though. No hate for Madonna, though, it's just not what she does. I didn't find Antonio Banderas's accent off-putting at all. It lent a bit more authenticity to the performance for me, although he's obviously not from Argentina. Maybe if I spoke Spanish or could at least hear the differences between accents, then it might be distracting. But he's a great singer and an even better actor (although you miss some of that with an audio recording, of course), and I like his interpretation of this role a lot; in fact I'd say he's my favorite (NOT because he's hot, although that doesn't hurt). Most Chés I hear just sound too…NICE. Ricky Martin is a prime example, and how that performance earned a Tony nomination is beyond me. The rest of the cast is good, nothing earth-shattering, but a solid cast for a Hollywood film. And our two leading men, Jonathan Pryce and Jimmy Nail, were a real surprise to me when I first saw the film. I had no idea either of them sang at all! I personally bought this for two major reasons: 1) Antonio Banderas, and 2) the orchestrations. Some recordings do compensate for the limitations of a theater orchestra pit by bringing in a larger one for official recordings. But a major Hollywood movie, especially a musical, will almost always have larger orchestras, and ALW's music deserves to be heard this way. If you are planning to purchase just one Evita album, I wouldn't recommend this one--but I say that as someone who enjoys stage musicals, so it depends on your taste. If you have only seen the film, I recommend you at least preview some songs on other recordings before you make your purchase. You may find the more traditional theatre-style of singing not to your liking--or you may fall in love with one of them. You never know. Happy listening!

Great!!!. Love this movie and the singing is great!!!
