Very good.. It's so nice these days to see solidly produced music that's also well-written. Heretic Pride is one of those rare modern albums that uses contemporary instrumentation, and is still intelligent. Songs like "Autoclave" and "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" make fantastic analogies that help tremendously to clarify the point of the song. In addition, "New Zion" and "Heretic Pride" deal tactfully with religion, while songs like "So Desperate" and "How to Embrace a Swamp Creature" cover the more uncomfortable aspects of romance. The bonus track "Toolshed" is based off of an infamous line from the reversed version of "Stairway to Heaven," and reworks it into one of the more haunting songs produced by The Mountain Goats so far. Overall, this is a fantastic album, and I would definitely recommend it.

Darnielle is ingenious. Few musicans can achieve the dichotomy of despair and joy that Darnielle creates in this album. Epitomized in the songs Heretic Pride, Autoclave, In the Craters on the Moon, and Lovecraft in Brooklyn, the emotional range here is truly amazing; and to have the creativity and guts to put such a potent message of joy in a song about a man being killed is beyond any praise i can give. Heretic Pride is honestly one of the best albums I've ever heard.
