How is John so consistent?. A fantastic addition to the large catalog of the Mountain Goats. Its a long way from the lo-fi stuff we all fell in love with, but this may be the best of his "studio" offereings... perhaps better than even Tallahasse? Sax Rohmer reminds me of the older stuff (full of disturbing and intriguing imagery and simple folk guitar type structure), and the strings on San Bernadino are perfect compliment to his melancholy songwriting. If you don't like it after those 2 songs, you may need to look elsewhere.

A lyrical masterpiece. John Darnielle may just be the greatest songwriter of the last 20 years. Nowhere else will you find lyrics as amazing as The Mountain Goats. Hectic Pride is 16th album for The Mountain Goats and they have yet to skip a beat. What other band can stay this fresh for well over a decade? And while the lyrics are incredible, it doesn't take away from the music either. Hectic Pride is a little more developed than previous albums but it still stays true to The Mountain Goats lo-fi style. Most of the songs are just a few string instruments with a couple guitars and drums stuck in every so often. Essential tracks: Sax Rohmer #1, San Bernardino and Lovecraft in Brooklyn

Very little need be said.. I have listened to this band since I was 14 years old. I am 26 now. I have never been disappointed. "Transcendental Youth" is scheduled to be released tomorrow. Purchase it.

Worth it!. The album is a bit more upbeat than they normally do but it still has the smartest lyrics ever. I love most of the songs, especially Sax Rohmer, Autoclave and Herectic Pride.
