Amazing!!!!. This is a breathtaking, wondrous work of art! I cannot wait for the next three volumes of this exhilarating experience!

An Ambitious and Jaw-dropping work of art. Throughout this album, Jacob manages to perfectly meld complexity with accessibility within his music, using polyrhythms, dense harmonies, and some truly FUNKY drum pockets that all come together to make music that can be appreciated on an intelectual level as well as an emotional level. Djesse Volume 1 boasts 7 originals and 2 brilliantly arranged covers. AND THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST OF FOUR ALBUMS! The album is quite diverse, ranging from the sweeping vocals of the opening track, “Home is” to the percussion and synth breakdown section of “With The Love In My Heart” (one of the funkiest things I’ve heard in my whole life). Jacob really knows how to balance the crazy sections with consonant, calm moments. “Ocean Wide, Canyon Deep” and “Once You”, aside from being absolutely beautiful, allow the album to breathe a bit. “Overture” and “Djesse” show off Jacob’s quirky, and by no means predictable, orchestral writing. Strings, brass, and a plethora of percussion instruments accompany vocals, allowing Jacob to create a soundscape of epic proportions. Jacob actually says in an interview that in contrast to his album “In My Room”, in this album, he treats the wide world as that room. “Everlasting motion” is a very unique track that features Hamid El Kasri of Morocco. Hamid’s call and response paired with Jacob’s funky rhythms create a global fusion that sounds as if it was as much of a delight to create as it is to listen to. The track also features some boldly abrupt changes in soundscape (something Jacob manages to pull off consistently in all of his music), constantly pulling the listener in new directions while still remaining cohesive. The first of the two covers is “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, which blends orchestral textures with pop vocals in a way that adds some Jacob Collier flare to it without straying too far from the vibe of the original song by The Police. Finally, “All Night Long” is my personal favorite track of the album. The arrangement is just so soulful, and the build-up into the horn feature gives me chills every time I listen to it. Impressive sax runs and brass chords mark the climax of the track- not to mention a NASTY piano solo from JC himself at the end of this horn feature. He even throws in a quote from Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm” which is covered on his last album. This album is a work of art that’s an absolute thrill to listen to. Can’t wait for the next 3!

Amazing talented young man!. I am in total awe of the talent from this young man. Absolutely jaw dropping
