The way the soul will cry if you let it. This Cd absolutely changed me and the whole album is an experience, and I relate and feel every second of this album. and it just bare as it gets! If you are looking for something that will open your eyes and your heart this is it. Phenominal expression of of a man
Dead at 45. It's so sad to discover this amazing, original artist at his peak had just passed away from lung cancer. He joins the pantheon of great musicians that have died too early. Anchored in the traditions of southern blues, his music reflects the raw power that great writing coupled with skilled playing on a National can bring to his listening audience. This album, along with 'Living with the Law' are a great introduction to this fine man. He will be missed.
Moving. I have been a huge Whitley fan for over a decade and this album is one of his "raw-est" pieces. The news of his untimely death saddened me to no end. He was a great artist and will be missed. This music cuts to the bone and is simply gritty and moving. A must-have for any rock, blues, or country fan.
The most important record in my collection.. I've owned this record since I first accidentally found it in '98 - it's been my favorite recording since then. Each song is an experience in itself; the hypnotic "Scrapyard Lullaby", the melancholic "Indian Summer". "Accordingly" is a love letter never read, where "Wild Country" is an unnecesary apology. "Ballpeen Hammer" comes off as a threat, and "From One Island to Another" is a reassurance that everything we feel, we can feel alone. "Altitude" addresses the 'urgency of now', and "Dirt Floor" reminds us of why these songs are sung. Each and every sound of fingers on wound steel imparts a heaviness to "Loco Girl", a heaviness contained in the lyric and undermined by the title. "Dirt Floor" is the greatest collection of songs I've ever heard, each more original than the last. It is a record devoid of cliches, intense in it's own, new creation, with hooks, heart breaking melodies and a rhythm sure as my own pulse when listening. This recording resonates so strongly, you'll wonder why it took so long to hear nine songs that so perfectly define the experience of being alive. Never before have I heard a solo voice, guitar & banjo sound so earnestly compelling; so unfortunate that I doubt I ever will again.
barebones beauty. i dare you to listen to the title track and not cry. this album is the sound of a lone genius at work. incredible guitar work, as always. we miss you dreadfully
