Proceed with Caution. This a undoubtably a five star album but some of these re-mastered songs sound awful. Especially bad were Between the Bars, Angeles, and Rose Parade. They sound like low bit rate MP3s. Before some audiophile snob says “These are low bit rate MP3s,” I mean these sound like 96 kbit/s MP3s. The bass seems to breakup and there’s an annoying ring that accompanies some of the quieter guitar parts. This is not present in the original release that is available on iTunes. I urge you to buy that then come here and get the newly released live and studio recordings separately because they sound great. I am basing my review off of the streaming tracks available on Apple Music but I did listen to the samples on iTunes and I heard the same issues. I ordered the vinyl edition of this album and If it sounds anything like this I’m returning it. If you’ve downloaded this album I hope the tracks sound great but I thought the warning should be out there.

So exited.. I’m a pretty new Elliott Smith fan. I’m also pretty young. Elliott Smith died a month after I was born so I have no memories of him from while he was alive. I only recently found out about him this summer and have been listening non-stop since. I have all of his albums and I downloaded a couple live shows off the internet. His music brings a certain feeling that is hard to describe. For me the music makes me feel comfortable with my own insecurity and thats the beauty of it. I love his albums and I also love his rarities. I hope that Kill Rock Stars are able to make expanded editions of other Elliott Smith albums with rarities so we can finally have all of Elliott’s beautiful tracks officially released to the public.
