Julia Carin Michaels (née Cavazos; born November 13, 1993) is an American singer and songwriter. She has received five Grammy Award nominations, including twice for Song of the Year and Best New Artist, as well as nominations from MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards. Born in Iowa and raised in California, Michaels began her career writing for other artists at the age of 16. Following her success as a writer, she signed to Republic Records in 2016 and released her debut single as a recording artist: "Issues" the following year, which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified quintuple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Her debut major-label extended play, Nervous System was released in 2017 and peaked at number 48 on the Billboard 200 chart.
