The Gods We Can Touch by AURORA

"The Gods We Can Touch" is the third album by Norwegian singer and songwriter AURORA, released in January 21, 2022 by Decca Records. It is a provocative album about shame, desire and morality, seen through the narrative prism of greek mythology. In each of the album’s songs we meet a different god. The album was produced by longtime collaborator Magnus Skylstad and herself during the COVID-19 pandemic. Features French singer Pomme on track Everything Matters. “The Greeks had gods and goddesses for everything. For anxiety, for wine, for sex… Long ago when this concept of gods and goddesses started they were more human, more relatable, and almost touchable. Most importantly, they had flaws.” – AURORA about her album. AURORA started writing for the album in January 2019. She started talking about a new album shortly after releasing A Different Kind Of Human – Step 2, mentioning a possible 2020 release. On October 28, 2019, AURORA mentioned that she asw working on two albums at the same time, one of which she has said is "longer into the future." She then talked about the closer one, saying: "The perspective is much bigger. It's still quite political, and it's still quite opinionated and it's also very emotional. It's even more about the individuals that make the army. It's an album for every individual within the big army of love.“ On December 3, 2019, AURORA revealed more information saying: "My next album will be dressed in an armor of hardness. But I'm also really exploring the soft, delicate part of me, which I want to open up even more on my next album." On May 11, 2020, AURORA archived all her Instagram posts, and then, posted about a new song about love and a new era. The next day, she announced the album's originally-intended first single, Exist For Love, sharing that it was the beginning of Chapter 3. It was officially released on May 14th, 2020. Cure For Me was released on July 7, 2021, replacing Exist For Love as the album's lead single. The day before, AURORA did an interview with Berges Tidende where she stated that her new album is finished, saying "before I left home, I listened to the latest version and approved it". A snippet of the Exist For Love music video was shown in the Cure For Me video, further supporting the song remaining on the album. On October 11, AURORA announced Giving In To The Love as the album's third official single. It was released worldwide on October 14, 2021. The album was officially announced at the time of the single's release. On December 3rd, the promo single, Heathens was released by surprise and soon after a live performance video of the song was published. A livestreamed show, "A Touch Of The Divine", was announced, planned for January 25, 2022, shortly after the album release. About this show AURORA said: "it's gonna sound different live than it's gonna be on the livestream to kind of wrap the music in different ways." On January 5, 2022, AURORA announced a new upcoming single Instagram, tagging French singer-songwriter Pomme in the post, who did the same on her Instagram. On January 7th, A Dangerous Thing and Everything Matters were released as a single (titled after the first song). The store-exclusive 'standard' and white vinyl editions feature an alternative track listing; their track positions are different and The Woman I Am and The Devil Is Human are included, replacing Giving In To The Love and You Keep Me Crawling from the other editions. The album commercially obtained a good performance in International lists. It was the singer's second number #1 album in Norway (2,300 copies) and her first top 10 in the UK (4,000 copies), respectively. The album also charted in Belgium, Austria, Australia, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Spain, Scotland, Poland, Switzerland and the United States. It is estimated to have sold over 25,000 copies worldwide in its first week. The album received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 80, which indicates "universal acclaim", based on 9 reviews.
