Sabbath's most underrated album...ever. Yes, this is not Ozzy era Sabbath like most folks like, but just give this one a chance as Tony Iommi blows you away with his massive riffs on "The Shining", "Ancient Warrior", "Hard Life To Love" "Glory Ride" & "Nightmare". The other tracks are great just not as powerful. Tony Martin's debut on vocals and he shines on all the tracks. This one was released in Fall 1987 and holds up still today, this is mostly for the die-hards, but not a bad place to start post Ozzy era. Not their best album of course, but worth a listen, play loud!

NEED MORE SABBATH. im even talkin more Tony Martin. If u like this album get Headless Cross

MORE TONY MARTIN ALBUMS ITUNES. This is the only one of the Tony Martin era Black Sabbath albums that can be streamed. It’s a shame the others are still hidden. HOWEVER. This is tied for the best in my eyes. The Shining, Glory Ride, Hard Life to Love, and the Title track are GREAT. Underrated Sabbath Masterpiece.

Surprised. I've never been a fan of Tony Martin, but I was stunned at how good this album was. I'd barely heard of it, and usually overlooked it. Is it Sabbath's best work? No. In fack, it may be one of their darkest hours. Despite this Eternal Idol is worth checking out. I wouldn't recomend it as a starting place, rather, the last good Sabbath album a fan should listen to. I'd like to say four stars, but it's just good, and not great. I'd say it depends on one's taste which tracks to get of this one, so see what you like, then buy it.

Tony Martin is awesome. Apple needs to have all the Tony Martin albums on here...cuz he has great range and he sounds better than all the previous singers

singer is ok but the. the singer is alright but the songs are bad

The Best of the Tony Martin Era. Arguably, this is the best album from the time Tony Martin was Black Sabbath's singer. His vocals are reminicient of Ronnie James Dio's voice, but with a bit of a higher range. I find myself going back to this album more often than I do the Ozzy era albums. I still think Dio's stint in the band yielded their best -- "Heaven & Hell," but I put this one second or third behind it. It still shows Tony Iommi playing his trademark riffs ("Shining," "Ancient Warrior," and Hard Life to Love"). Very good stuff!

One of the better Sabbath albums. Black Sabbath was at their best when Tony Martin was the vocalist, in my opinion, and the only better Black Sabbath album than this is TYR (by the way, where is TYR??). Deep, dark, and original, and Tony's vocal ability is exceptional.

Why Me?. I love Black Sabbath. They're my favorite metal band in the world. But this album is so great. It's probably their best album in the 80s. The music & melodies are some of the best I have ever heard in rock music! But the volcals are just not it for me. Tony Martin is a great singer, but for me...He's just not right for Black Sabbath. I want to love this album, but I can't because no one named Ronnie James Dio or Ozzy Osbourne is behind the mike.

2nd "Iommi" solo disc. This should also be call "Iommi" - The Eternal Idol. This and Seventh Star were done a diservice by being billed as Black Sabbath. They stand on their own as great music!

Where are the other albums with Tony Martin. Come on iTunes. Get with the program. Need Headless Cross.

Great. A great album. We need the rest of Tony Martin's Sabbath work

Unappreciated Black Sabbath Era. I really recommend buying the album, the "Eternal Idol" is one of the greatest albums in the underrated circle besides "Headless Cross". Tony Martin did an excellent job on all the songs especially on the opener "The Shining" and "Glory Ride" all and all fantastic album, too bad Ray Gillen left after recording the original "Eternal Idol" its one hell of an album with Ray though his voice can be heard on "Nightmare" listen closely he's laughing!

hohum. Bought this album when it came out. Tried again and again to like this LP played it over and over to no avail. 3 stars just out of love for the late great Black Sabbath

Just want more Tony Martin. I love this album, yes it’s a different version of Sabbath. But Tony’s vocals are amazing. If you like 80s metal you should have no problem with this version of Sabbath. But here’s the thing Tony Martin didn’t write any of the music on here, it was meant for a different singer. Which is the reason why it’s even more disappointing that his other Sabbath fronted albums are not on here. The guy had the second longest tenure in the band, I wish the disrespect would end against him. How can younger fans make heads or tails of the era or even show their love for it if you can’t buy it and are forced to listen to albums after this on YouTube. Great first album with Martin though!

Mixed feelings in Eternal Idol.. Three words, "Proceed with caution". I really want to like this album. I believe folks when they say they really like it. "Born to lose" is great. "Shining" is good. But I've played this cd only a handful of times in over 15 years, unlike over so many Sabbath albums that are timeless and I play over and over. It just doesn't grab me the same. But I hand it to Iommi, he trys hard and even today, keeps truckin along. I wish more older bands kept up with his effort. So a Sabbath fan already? Check it out. For a new Sabbath fan, skip it and get a cd Gezzer on bass, and with Dio or Ozzy (and I like Gillan) singing.

A tough one..... Probably the best of the Tony Martin albums, maybe because he had no hand in the writing of lyrics or vocal melodies. Though Martin is easily my least favorite singer for Black Sabbath, I can actually tolerate his singing on this, partly because he sticks to his high register and he doesn’t sing about the devil most of the time. Tony Iommi gets in some memorable guitar riffs on The Shining, Born To Lose and The Eternal Idol. It’s a very good sounding album. And I love that there is an instrumental here. But, it doesn’t sound or feel like a band album...take away Iommi’s riffs and this could be any band. Geezer Butler or Bill Ward would have at least added more personality to these songs, showing that the original Black Sabbath was more than just Iommi. Black Sabbath didn’t feel like a band at this time, it felt like Tony Iommi with a bunch of session players. Still, the story behind the recording of this album is quite entertaining, and Eternal Idol is a notch or two above Seventh Star. I like this album, though I don’t think it’s one of the better Black Sabbath albums.

Damn.. Tony Martin's voice in Sabbath was always powerful. I like the title track, "Nightmare", "Ancient Warrior" & "The Shining". I would like to see "Headless Cross", "TYR", "Cross Purposes", "Forbidden" & the Ozzy albums up here on Itunes.

Track 9!!!!. Is as great as any Sabbath tune, Great Album!

Black Sabbath. This albulm is weird yet it is good. All Black Sabbath is good.

A great album with amazing singer. I'm sick and tired of people saying that Tony Martin isn't a good singer. Listen to tracks like nightmare, the shining, ancient warrior and lost forever. And you hear how great of a vocalist he is, I still waiting to see if iTunes gets headless cross, tyr, cross purposes and forbidden. Which great albums that Tony Martin sing on, he is the one best vocalist sabbath had.

Good.... … but the Ray Gillen version is so much better.

Tony. Martin.. Astounding how great Sabbath sounded with Tony Martin on vocals. We need more of the Martin era albums! Let’s see TYR and Headless Cross next.

Sabbath completes. If your some one who want’s to own a copy of all things Black Sabbath,I would definitely get this. This is the band that started true heavy metal as it’s called. Many bands follow in their foot steps.

I love it!. I have always liked this Sabbath album a lot. Give it a fair chance without preconceived expectations. Most of the songs are really great rock tunes. I always enjoy hearing these songs even after all of these years.

A hidden gem. This lineup of sabbath produced some hidden gems of metal. Is Martin as good as ozzy or dio, no he's not. Does he have to be, nope. Maybe I like these albums because I haven't heard them hundreds of times, it's the only sabbath music that feels new if that makes sense with these albums being well over a decade old. Very solid album, just wish they had the other Martin era sabbath albums on here as well.

Still Metal. I honestly don't know why people say that this album is more pop than metal. You can still hear that classic heavy Sabbath sound throughout the songs. It may be a different singer ( Tony Martin ), but it's still Sabbath. If you like other Sabbath works and metal in general, I would suggest this album.

Was pleasantly surprised. Going through the Sabbath discography, the last two albums disappointed. I was growing skeptical of the non Ozzy/Dio era. This album is not without a couple fillers (Glory Ride, Born to Lose, Scarlet Pimpernel) but largely, it is a great album. The Shining is without a doubt the highlight track, and a good starting point if you're unsure about entering this era of Sabbath, but all other tracks, Ancient Warrior, Hard Life, Lost Forever, Title Track, Nightmare... I will revisit all of them on a more regular basis. iTunes still needs the rest of the Tony Martin era though

3 great songs. Nightmare, The Shining and The Ethernal Idol are killer tracks. Some of the others are average in my opinion but overall probably the best CD of the Tony Martin era.

Born to Lose. The best track on the collection… everything else is ehh

Friend or Foe. Eternal Idol the cd title and the song title is pure Black Sabbath jam without the Oz! I have bought 3 of the Iommi cds: The Eternal Idol, Headless Cross & Seventh Star and founf them all to be as worthy as any Ozzy tunes. Iommi keeps the style of doom with thought provoking lyrics. I say if you do not like it - it's friend or foe?

not sabbath. I love sabbath both with ozzy and the dio years I even like born again .This album is not a sabbath album it sounds like 80's pop metal total crap, you want a good sabbath album get sabotage, heaven and hell ,sabath bloody sabath.then you will know why sabbath is one of the greatest bands of all time and godfarthers of metal.

Where are the good Martin albums. I am a huge Sabbath fan, have been since I was a seventh grader. I have heard every black sabbath album except for Cross Purposes Live, but this album isn't among the groups top ten albums. Even though my favorite Sabbath albums are the ones with Tony Martin on vocals, but this is really not a great album. Even though most of the bass and guitar sounds pretty good, but the drumming is poor and the song lyrics really don't have much of a purpose. All I'm asking is that freaking iTunes would put the other Tony Martin sabbath albums up so that everyone can see how good they are, especially Headless Cross. Anyway, don't by any song from this album except for The Shining.

Eternal Idol. Excellent work. Why does a group have to reproduce the same album to make a good album. This album showcases the growth of Sabbath and if you listen will leave you wanting more.

Sabbath's Greatest album. I know I could get tarred and feathered for this, but this is Sabbath's best album, including the Ozzy and Dio era material. It's not because of Tony Martin's voice, so don't start blasting him. The writing and performance are spectacular. It's as if Tony Iommi really had something to prove. It doesn't have the doom vibe of their earlier work, but there was nothing really great about any of that.

NIGHTMARE AWSOME!. I love the song nightmare it has a guitar part i love awsome song and album and band and THEY ROCK!

A great example of post-Ozzy Sabbath. When people think about Sabbath, all discussion seems to start and end with Ozzy. Sabbath had a great ride after he left, and this is a prime example of that. Eternal Idol is a great record, that stands the test of time. If you love Sabbath, but have never listened beyond the Ozzy era, check this out.

WHAT?!?!?!?. What is this? This is certainly not black sabbath, thats for sure. It's basically just Tony Iommi and a bunch of posers playing 80's metal garbage. An Ozzy-less sabbath is not sabbath at all.

Worth a shot but not the best.. I suppose you could categorize the career of Black Sabbath into roughly three eras: Ozzy, Dio, and the other vocalists whose names I usually can't remember. (Of course at various times Ozzy and Dio have both come and gone again.) This is one of those "other singers" albums that kind of got lost in Black Sabbath's late 80s revolving members years. I don't think Black Sabbath ever put out a bad album, but some are classics and others are not. This one decidedly is not. It is a good CD full of solid songs and decent performances, but it isn't very memorable and kind of got lost in the shuffle for me. It is not as good as the other CDs of the era: Tyr, Headless Cross, and Cross Purposes. If you want to check out a non Ozzy or Dio Black Sabbath album Headless Cross would be a good place to start.

A Hidden Gem. Tony Iommi proved that Sabbath wasn't dead when he recorded this opus. This album has plenty of heavy riffs, good leads and good production which would mark the beginning of the Tony "The Cat" Martin era. The album had actually been finished when Ray Gillan left the band so Martin re-did the vocals on this one. The album is full of good, traditional Sabbath tunes. Most notable is the plodding "Ancient Warrior", reminiscent of older Sabbath and the title track with it's sinister lyrics and riff. Also good here are "GLory Ride" and the haunting "Nightmare". The album has many good moments and for fans of metal is a good listen from start to finish. The guys play well together here and it is a shame that this album doesn't get better recognition. Iommi's guitar playing is stellar, as if he had refreshed and recharged after the debacle that was the tour for Seventh Star. Eric Singer and Bob Daisley, both well known in hard rock and metal circles for their playing, make large contributions here, allowing Iommi to really bring his guitar sound back to the fore. I highly recommend this, as it marks not only the end of the Warner Brothers era, but it may well be Tony's finest moment as a guitarist and song-writer outside the Ozzy and Dio eras, and overall it is one of the band's better performances overall.

Not rating this album.. I'm not putting a rating on this album, because I've honestly never listened to the whole thing. I'm just curious why "Headless Cross" and "TYR" are not on iTunes. I really dig those albums, and Tony Martins' vocals are really, pretty awesome. I've been looking for those albums here for a while. Had both on cassette when they were released back in '87 and '90. Hope to see them here someday soon. I think with Tony in vocals, the rest of the band had more freedom than they did with Ozzy and Dio at the helm. I think they open their sound more on these albums, doing more what THEY like, and not just what the 'leader' wants to hear. Nothing against Ozzy nor RJD- but I have read stories of how suppressing they could be with band mates. I was at "Super Rock '90" in Germany, right after Rowan Robertson joined the band, and he did NOT let Rowan do a guitar solo. Instead, he had Jens Johanssen do a keyboard solo. Not sure if there was a reason behind that, but it just seemed odd to me.

Ozzy. I agree with Tyler515 they dont't have ANY albums with Ozzy.

Good Album. Very underrated by the Masters of Metal, but if you could I-Tunes, could you get all the deluxe editions that they released in the last year or two, as there is a wealth of classic material, even on the Eternal Idol, they have the other singer Ray Gillen that had recorded some of the songs but finally released them for all to hear on the deluxe verson, also on the Mob rules there's that great Concert Album from the Hammersmith Odeon thats on Cd 2 so Can we please have some extras???

Good album. This is a good album by sabbath!,,!

iTunes. Can you add more Black Sabbath albums Headless Cross , Tyr, Cross Purposes & Forbidden please

Eternal Idol. The Eternal Idol is a solid power metal offering, Iommi picking up the pieces of Seventh Star and returning with an assortment of band members to produce one of the stronger Tony Martin era albums. Get your hands on the Ray Gillen demos for some interesting comparisons.

Good album. This is a pretty solid ablbum by sabbath. really like ancient warrior, and eternal idol

One of the best Sabbath albums. As a long time fan who listens to almost every album regularly, this album is a must have!

We need more Sabbath. Where is the Ozzy? The rest of Tony Martin? And the one album i would love to have in my collection Born Again, love Dio...and i bought the 3 originals from his era with Sabbath...and would love to by alot more....like i said, we need more Sabbath

NEED MORE BLACK SABBATH. the iTunes music store rocks, but u guys need more black sabbath, like more of there early albums ect.
