Runway. Vocals notwithstanding, Caution is Mariah's most interesting album since TEOM. Top 5* Tracks (in album order): Caution, A No No, The Distance, One Mo' Gen, 8th Grade, and... *Runway. Wish they made Runway available outside of Japan, but clearing the rights was an issue. Walter A. wanted too much money for the Butterfly sample. Money lost, as people will find other ways to obtain the song.

I miss the old Mariah. I grew up listening to Mariah when she released Someday. The Mariah who did Ballads and could showcase her ability to hold a note is long gone. Portrait is the only song I can listen to. The rest is the same attempt to sound hip. Please Mariah go back to your roots. Every other artist is releasing the same song. Best in the music business. Even when she whisper sings she is still a better vocalist than anyone else out there, and she can honestly do so many different and amazing things with her voice. The 3 tracks released are great. The album cover is fire. My only complaint is that the album doesn’t have more songs. Review updated in 2022 4 years on this album holds up & gets even better with time. I love the mellow groove and crisp production.

It’s a good album but plays it safe 💿. So the album is good but it feels like a filler album. She definitely played it “safe” and I definitely believe she lost or doesn’t use her whistles that much anymore and is just singing for the sake of singing. Which don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad thing since we all will remember the old Mariah we grew up with and loved. Some of the songs have a sultry and yet “heard of before” R&B kinda feel to them which is fine. There’s a good number of them that I like but I wish there was more because I feel that it’s missing that “oomph” to it. It had the potential of being a Emancipation of Mimi part 2, but it ended up being a filler album with not a lot of backstory to it. Overall though; as a long time fan - I’m very happy to have gotten this album and here’s hoping that her last and final album will be more memorable. This new album gives us a glimpse into her more understated side, with songs in which Mariah’s voice weaves in and out of their hooks and lyrics with remarkable ease and finesse. Not since the zeitgeist production ‘Butterfly’ has she embodied with such mastery the current R&B sound, while all the same delivering the iconic vocals that mark the tracks as quintessential Mimi.

Still waiting for a powerhouse Ballad to go #1 and put her back on everyone’s radar but this album is dope and I pray it does amazing on the Charts and produces a #1

Proceed with Caution. Any five star review, while subjective, is misleading. I’m as big a MC fan as anyone but she hasn’t produced a cracking album since Emancipation. That said Caution is her best overall album since but it doesn’t contain any major high points. Funnily enough GTFO is close to a cracker, Portrait is close to old school Mariah, Caution and Giving Me Life and 8th Grade are groovy and A No No is fun.It’s a very relaxed sound, which makes it easy to listen to. Unfortunately we have to accept the 90s Mariah is gone, ironically we have a 47 year old trying to sound like she’s half her age again.

One and only. This sounds like Mariah Carey at her most relaxed at doing what she loves, most assured in her artistry, perhaps most unconcerned about charts and sales. There are no pretensions or endeavours to recreate past critical successes such as Butterfly. This album stands on its own. Some places may be vaguely reminiscent of the vibes of certain earlier songs of hers, yet overall it has an undeniably fresh and current sound. And there is a strong sense that the songs are justly served, showcasing Mariah’s mature and clever songwriting without it being upstaged by showy belts and runs and whistle notes. I love that all the songs here have a groove or feel-good vibe about them, and certainly a whole lot of heart and soul (as do all Mariah songs). After a number of listens I make no reservations in saying that this album is one of the best efforts from one of the most talented singer-songwriters to ever live, and it deserves to be listened to by as many people as possible.

Coherent, Consistent, Best work in years. After Mariah released “The Distance” prior to the release, I got super excited for the album. It felt like we were in for something different. It did deliver. With 3 songs already out and heavily dissected and reviewed, I started with the 3rd track, “Caution”. Hot damn! Fantastic! The flow just continues on! Faves: The Distance, Caution, Giving Me Life.

The Battle Of Eras.. This album is heavily R&B and hip hop infused Mariah. A slight dab into the reminiscent Fantasy ft ODB with swift melisma runs and reliant vocal layerings within a few tracks. The albums musical direction is infused in early 2000s-2010 Mariah. Era’s such as Rainbow, Charm Bracelet and E=MC2 are sampled within the influence of tracks such as Giving Me Life and Stay Long Love You. Highlights of Mariah’s artistry peak within the last track that concludes the fifteenth album of Mariah’s legacy, - ‘Portrait’, a ballad that seeps within the lifestyle of Mariah’s past relationships and life that entail the hardship of the limelight and a juxtaposing depiction. In conclusion, the album lacks Mariah’s signature gospel songs or fewer ballads, yet holds a torch to her fans with the classic sound fans are accustomed to. Mariah is clearly catering to her fans on the record.

MARIAH DELIVERS. So smooth and silky with the right amount of sass we expect from Mariah. Stand out tracks ‘Caution’ and ‘A No No’ have such a great bop. Her most experimental track in a while ‘Giving Me Life’ is so fresh and takes us deep into the rhythm and blues genre we don’t get to hear often enough from Mariah. Of course the heart of the album ‘Portrait’ steals the show, forcing you to press repeat to take it all in. In control and confident - Caution is worth the wait!

BEST ALBUM SINCE EMANCIPATION. Mariah has always been my favoruite arist, but even I have been critical of recent albums and singles in the last 10 years. Her last studio effort, The Elusive Chanteuse, was her best in years, yet still lacked a punch. Coming back with such a SOLID album as 'Caution' with incredible songwriting, producers, guests and slick production makes me remember why she was top of her game when I first fell in love with her in the 90's. She's never lost her 'sound', just evolved, and is working to her vocal strengths. This is my Summer Album of 2018. I can't wait for the newly confirmed remix of A No No with Cardi B and Lil' Kim!!!
