As It Was by Harry Styles Song Lyrics
Come on, Harry, we wanna say goodnight to you
Holdin' me back
Gravity's holdin' me back
I want you to hold out the palm of your hand
Why don't we leave it at that?
Nothin' to say
And everything gets in the way
Seems you cannot be replaced
And I'm the one who will stay, oh-oh-oh
In this world, it's just us
You know it's not the same as it was
In this world, it's just us
You know it's not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
You know it's not the same
Answer the phone
"Harry, you're no good alone
Why are you sitting at home on the floor?
What kind of pills are you on?"
Ringin' the bell
And nobody's coming to help
Your daddy lives by himself
He just wants to know that you're well, oh-oh-oh
In this world, it's just us
You know it's not the same as it was
In this world, it's just us
You know it's not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
You know it's not the same
Go home, get ahead, light-speed internet
I don't wanna talk about the way that it was
Leave America, two kids follow her
I don't wanna talk about who's doin' it first
(Hey)
As it was
You know it's not the same as it was

Harry's House has the Welcome Mat at the door, inviting you in. On my first listen to Harry Styles’ 2022 album ‘Harry’s House’ it is inviting and does not leave you in the cold. Just outside the door. This new album was made during COVID lock-down in England. Harry has said that it was written inside his house, and lounge room. Before he was allowed to go into a real studio, to flesh out the rest of the album. So, it had a cosy atmosphere, from the beginning. I have read previous reviews about this “Harry’s House” album. That said it was more like background music, than anything else. But it has a lot to live up to. With the previous album “Fine Line”, being a favourite of many people (not so long ago). So, I was a bit hesitant to buy this album after reading that review. But I am glad I did. Like I said, this album is at first listen, more inviting. But yes, the music seems purpose ‘built’ for more sitting down and chilling out, with the stereo on in the background. Like white, or pink noise, to lull you into a false sense of security. However, on one song he entices the listeners of his music to try something “new” and see if they like it. People may soon come to realise they are enjoying the “taste” of an exciting “flavour of the day” music star on the stereo. Harry’s new music seems familiar to most everyday people, but somewhat blends into the surroundings, at first. So, his music is still hip and happening enough, to perk the interest of listeners. But nothing too over the top, to offend people while they go about their day. Even if just below the surface, people may soon realise what they are “tasting”, is something entirely different. Then what they first thought on their initial bite. There are bursts of doo-wops, and excited shrills, through out some of the album. When you least expect it. A sort of wake-up call from your stupor, or ho-hum rhythm of life. Still, I find myself humming and singing along when I least expect it. Especially after repeat listens. Once you get to know the songs. They become like ear-worms. An unconscious thing you are singing along to, inside your head. Or your “house”. Before you realise it, these songs have got under your skin. At present the biggest song off this album is “As It Was" with it's chopsticks piano rhythm. It sums up the longing, for some, to go back to the past. Because you never thought it possible, that the present was going to change so quickly. And then before you know it, nothing is as same as it was before. This present album though, is not a frivolous Pop album, as it first seems. It has its serious subject matters too. From the outside looking in. “Matilda” is a potent, devastating song. It is about a friend whose family do NOT appreciate her for the person she really is. Her family do NOT think Matilda as important, or special enough, to be bothered with her. But her friends always do. Matilda has NO self-worth as a person. Because she only Sees herself through the eyes of her family. Not that of her beloved friends. Who try to convince her, that love should go both ways. It should be unconditional. Her friends see and appreciate her as a unique person she is. Even if her family do not, or never will. This album is also a product of its time. With the global pandemic changing music artists perspective of the world in which we live. On ‘Harry’s House’ there are references to either going to or leaving America. So obviously America has influenced him personally, and professionally. Whether he likes it or not. When the lock downs happened. There must have been that initial frustration, of being stranded so far away from America. The gulf of being so far from another country, that should have been the centre of his life. The subject seems to have weighed on him heavily, and always been present in his thoughts. You can also hear him open about his new high-profile relationship. If just a little bit of an insight into being part of a Hollywood IT couple. So, some of Harry’s House is about this newfound love. But this love is still quite possibly a big maybe. Even though it is obvious this new partner, more than anyone else in this crazy world, gets him as a person. And vice versa, it is obvious he gets her. Harry ponders that if they both clearly sees all each other’s intricacies, why wouldn’t they both be all in with the relationship. It sounds more optimistic than ‘Fine Line’ about the love of his life. Like they are always seeing how things pan out or juggling their relationship. To make things work and be happy in love. Likewise, it sounds like they just want to escape things, just keep on driving. Rather than both face up to the reality, of their perspective situations. I don’t mind saying I liked 'Harry’s House' much more then 'Fine Line. The music on ‘Harry’s House’ in one word is Poptastic. So not as Indie Rock as “Fine Line”. But I find this approach much more accessible as a listener. I do not know why, or I can’t quite put my finger on it. The biggest hits from “Fine Line” were the Pop sounding ones, like “Watermelon Sugar”. So, I am guessing Harry and his songwriters, thought it better to lean into this sound. Because those sorts of songs had the most response on his previous works. So, if you like more of a Pop sounding Harry, in the background to your house. This is the album for you to escape to. It still has the obligatory ballads, and ear-worm pop songs. That his fans, and I suppose the record company, expect of his work. But is not quite the same as previous works. I think Harry has opened like never before, people just have not realised it yet. There is an everyday innocuous music sensibility to this album. It is not blasting from the rooftops, about the change in atmosphere to his music. So as not to be too noticeable a “house” in the neighbourhood. It reminds me of the English motto “Keep calm and carry on”. Even when just outside your door, things are crazier than ever. I have to say am pleasantly surprised by Harry’s House. Hopefully others will too!
LOVE. This man makes everything more joyful.
