Listen the second time. I was given this vinyl record for Christmas, they said if you like weezer you will like the strokes. So, I listened, I have no clue how the two bands are familiar but this album is really good. I gave this 3 stars on the first listen. On a few weeks later I played it again and I completely loved it. The strokes take a while for you to like. So buy this and if you don’t like it the first time, wait a few days and play it again.

Listened straight through. Tears, head-banging, swaying (I’m white), this album provoked so many different responses in just the first listen. Art.

The Strokes Are Back!. Yes, they are back and this album is very awesome🤘

A Stroke of Genius!. Great album! These songs made quarantine a lot easier. Every song has something different and unique to show off and they still give my chills every time I listen to them, even a year after they’ve been released. The Strokes never disappoint!

Ear Candy to cram down your audio gullet. The Stokes serve up yet another scrumptious nine-course meal ideal for sonic gluttony! The New Abnormal has much to brag about with the melodic magnitude of the album, the fully completed and brilliantly executed themes, synchronized solos, virulent vocals, and sublime sound production. However, there are a few unique elements that also stand out: First, The Adults Are Talking. Yes, they are. True to form, The Strokes deliver a killer opening track. This has been a unique hallmark for the band: they consistently kick things off with a track that provides perfect tone for the entire album, which is typically one of the best songs on the album, but is rarely one of the "hit singles" for the album. The opening riff is an audio time machine that transports the listener right back into Room on Fire. But rather than vamp on nostalgia, The Strokes use it as a launchpad to further explore their sound. Another example of this can be found in Not the Same Anymore where the vocals and accompaniment during the chorus could easily be mistaken for a forgotten track on Is This It or Room on Fire. This experience happens throughout the album and is one of its most appealing qualities. Another deft touch is the candid studio banter embedded in a few of the songs. It conveys a genuine comradery amongst the group, which is especially pleasant given the well-documented history of discord among one another. That levity can also be felt when Jules uses lyrics that seem to speak directly to the band. One instance is in Ode to the Mets when he mumbles off mid-verse as if something doesn’t feel right and says, “Uh… drums please Fab?” Two other instances arrive in Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus (one of the album’s best songs) where at the end of the bridge, Jules sings, “Can we switch into the chorus, right now?” before going back into the chorus. Earlier in the song, he also says “break” as the music momentarily comes to an absolute stop. Ever since Room On Fire, there has been a separation of The Strokes fanbase. The purists, that believe only the first two albums embody the true essence of the group (including those who say it is only in the debut album), and the broader (but perhaps smaller) fanbase that appreciates the full body of their work. This might be the first album in nearly 20 years that appeals to both.
