One-Hit Wonder...or Not. Frankly, all I remember from these guys was the Leadbelly cover-version "Black Betty" -which for some strange reason the rock press dubbed "Punk Rock" when it was clearly Southern Rock!- while the rest is just a blank. At the time, I hated "Black Betty" (and although I love Leadbelly, I wasn't too fond of his original either), I grew to almost appreciate their cover later on. But one middle-of-the-road-to-passable cover version of an old Blues song does not a career make. Can't really reccomend the album, therefore. If you want an at-times interesting version of a Leadbelly song, just download "Black Betty" and don't bother with the rest...

Allegorical Blood Bath. In point of fact, "Black Betty" is an allegorical homage to Dante's Inferno and his mythical descent into the depravity of sexual abandon. Not unlike Billy the Exterminator, if you would. Nevertheless it works for me on several levels. The crescendo of adroit zither work makes me soil myself. Oh my!

better than I've heard. Many people have told me that Black Betty is the only good song that Ram Jam had. That is my favorite of thiers, but the other stuff I think is good as well.

black betty. My uncle was peter charles and he was the original drummer in Ram Jam and he sadly to see is no longer with us but I am glad to see his memory will live on with Ram Jam.

A welcome collection. A friend of mine had Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Ram back in the 70s but I never could find it until this collection. I had always thought it better than the first album with the exception of Black Betty. When I saw this collection had the whole Portrait album on it I jumped at the chance to purchase it. I had not heard it for a good 30 years and was not disappointed. I was just as good as I remember, especially Turnpike. Well worth the purchase. Thanks, iTunes for bringing back some good memories.

Rams Be Jamin'. This album is just classic southern rock, Black Betty is one of my favorite songs, but check out the others, like Keep Your Hands On The Wheel, one of the most underrated songs ever. The reason most people only like Black Betty is because their is a different singer on the rest of their songs. Bill Bartlett sings on Black Betty, Myke Scavone sings on the rest. Great album either way!

Superb Classic Hard Rock. Even taking "Black Betty" out of the evaluation. You have 5 of the greatest hard rock songs of all time on this collection! They are: "Gone Wild", "Pretty Poison", "Hurrican Ride", "Just Like Me", and "Turnpike". These tracks are all their hard-to-find, oft neglected 2nd album, "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ram", which comprises the 2nd half of this collection. People that bought their 1st album, "Ram Jam" specifically for "Black Betty" likely figured they were a one hit wonder because the rest of that album is sub par. Not the case! Buy this for the previusly mentioned 5 songs alone! If you are at all into classic 70s hardrock, you will not be disappointed!!!

Southern Rock...yes!!. Black Betty is "THE" main song on here!! But I have found that they're a lot of others on here that I like as well. You have to like/love Southern Rock to understand the joy!! Rock On YA'LL!!!!

Ram Jammin'. Good not great Southern hard rock, a lost classic if you like bands like Angel, Blackfoot, Goddo, Moxy or Legs Diamond. I wish my local radio stations had played this back in the day instead of that disco crap.

If you need a drink, babe, I'll buy it.. The "very best" of Ram Jam? Actually, this is ALL the songs on their two albums. Their only real hit was "Black Betty", of course, but the rest of their material is pretty good. A couple of interesting things about these songs: Their song "Too Bad On Your Birthday" was covered by Joan Jett on her first album. There are TWO songs here that rhyme "Boston" with "Austin"!

Five + stars for Black Betty. Nestled within this very strange mix is one of the ALL time greats not to be missed: Black Betty by Bill Bartlett. Although very loosley based on Ledbetter it is ALL his creation and one of the greatest and original rockin tunes ever made. Its 5 star, doesnt get any better. High Steppin is also highly recomended.
