Indexed In Zinn's Text. This album is like an American populist's manifesto. In sharp contrast to the shallow, fashion conscious crapola coming out of the music biz, this album would make Woody Guthrie hopeful for the future of songs. "The Ghost of Tom Joad", "Youngstown" and "Sinaloa Cowboys" are as good as it gets.

If you like the subtle side of Bruce. ..."Highway 29" on this album is a must. The opening is sexy in a complex, psychological way but the song as a whole winds up dark and oddly beautiful. The last two lines are at once gorgeous and chilling, both musically and lyrically. Genius!

Hey, I'm from Youngstown . . .. This album might be Springsteen's least known and, perhaps for that reason, least appreciated but it is a true masterpiece of the marriage of critical consciousness, songwriting and muscianship. His song Youngstown is historically true and right on the dime. The guy gets it and shares the fire.

inspiring. excellent! takes you for a ride and leaves you better off when finished. wish I had 6 stars

Brooding, classic. Yeah, maybe you can question the authenticity of a rich rock star singing about the poor and voiceless, but isn’t this one function of a true artist, to give voice to the voiceless? I know all of Bruce’s famous albums intimately well, but this is the one that tugs at me the most when I haven’t heard it for a while.

Where's the title track. How can iTunes sell this album without the title track?

You Forget Sometimes.... That the man who wrote and recorded these wonderfully dark and true songs, the man now known as "The Boss", was at one time a passionate story teller named Bruce Springsteen. This is the Bruce that I go to when I want to reconnect for a few minutes. The song writer who gifted us with The River, Nebraska and this incredible record. I didn't know it at the time, but The Ghost of Tom Joad was the beginning of the end for me with Bruce. the last dying embers of a relationship that went back to "The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle". I held out hope for a while, but it ended officially when Bruce released a record only through that emblem of all that is wrong with America today, Wal-Mart. But for me, we will always have the good days, the heady exciting days when we called to Rosalita, when we went to a Meeting Across The River, and we rode among the ruins of Youngstown. It was never adios, more like vaya con Dios.

ghost of tom joad. Why can't I just buy "The Ghost of Tom Joad" single???? Come on.

Five Stars. Come on people... Youngstown is the best song in The Ghost of Tom Joad. The song,"Ghost of Tom Joad" Stinks.

Great album. This is a departure from the Springsteen that we're used to, and a good one to boot! Sparse instrumentals and a softer croon from Bruce come together with amazing lyrics to make, in my opinion, one of the better Springsteen albums.

A personal favorite. This is one of my personal favorites. I'm saying it is Springsteen's best work of all time, but the album is still great. Haunting songs and melodies, soothing instrumentation. I also love the cover that Rage Against the Machine did of "Ghost of Tom Joad." Great song... great album. Worth checking out!

campfire songs. To those that are out of work, laid off and collecting unemployment, buy this. I did. On my last job seeking trip to North Dakota, I listened to this album. On the shore's of devils lake ND. By the campfire light. On the fringes of the Mah Dah Hey Trail with cattle watching. The perfect album for a laid off rust belt electrician.

Storytelling at it's best!. Springsteen tells such great stories throughout this album. It is truly one of his best! My favorite song on the album is Straight Time. This is one of those rare albums that can be listened to from start to finish.

Then, no. Now, yes.. When this album first came out almost 20 years ago,I didn't like it. I wanted to, but I just couldn't. Perhaps because of its dark, brooding, negative tone, and I was newly married and had the world at my feet. Now, almost 20 years after Bruce released this, with me being 20 years wiser, and dealing with the pain of divorce and other depressing life issues, this album really hits home. I have recently rediscovered these brilliant songs, and regardless of the gloomy themes, Bruce's songwriting and storytelling are amazing.

Hit and miss. Not huge into this album, but Track 1 is my favorite Springsteen song of all time.

a desert island album. I've never been a Springsteen fan until this record. It's one of the few I own that I can listen to all the way through. there's a thread of Americana through out. Bruce and a guitar and great songs. perfect for my desert island collection

Stunning. I'm 19 and had never picked up a Springsteen Record before, heard Gregory Alan Isakov (look him up) play Dry lightning live and immediately bought this album and I love it. It's beautiful. Highway 29 is a favorite but it's all flawless.

Amazing. This album is simply amazing - from start to finish. GET IT NOW! It is one of the best albums I have ever heard. The lyrics tell great stories... the guitar brings you along for the ride... I'm going to listen to it again right now!!!

oh my lord. this album is in every aspect a complete msterpiece....a must own

Amazing. GROWING with time......feel sad for the loss......we both feel it....'SAD" This album just says it all.....have to listen and get it.... YOU are the real thing Mr. Springsteen....Bruce....BOSS......I feel I can walk up to you and become great aquaintances passing on the street......you touch so many in soooooo many different ways........songs of the heart no matter what side of the bed one wakes up on......."YOU ARE IT" THE REAL DEAL This album and those prior are 5 STAR..............

Very Beautiful. This is arguably Bruce's least known album and also arguably his best. Although, that may depend on which Bruce you like. If you are a fan of the pop/rock orientated stuff ala' Born in the USA you probably wont care for this album. However, if you prefer Bruce in his melancholy folk rock that reaches in and grasps the soul, this is an album you definately want to listen to. I think it is my personal favorite.

Bruce: The Common Man's Man.. Great album that no doubt left some Springsteen fans longing for the fist pumping rock of Born in The USA. While not necessarily a sequel to "Nebraska," it is a great companion piece. This is folk-rock storytelling at its best with a bit more instrumentation than Nebraska. Highly recommend "The Ghost of Tom Joad, ""Youngstown," and "My Best Was Never Good Enough."

2007 and still.... Love this album from start to finish, every Sinaloa cowboy is delighted by your work. I'm one of them..gracias.

Most Overated Artist Ever. Bruce Springsteen whining about being disenfranchised is about as legit as Milli Vanilli. He sings with his mouth closed and you can't hardly understand him.

Better than Nebraska. This is one of my all time favorite albums. Perfect, stripped down Bruce without all the bells and horns, singing sad songs about sad America. Classic.

Nice work Bruce. This album is great, my favorite is Sinaloa Cowboys. I prefer Bruce's lively songs like Cadillac Ranch, but this was enjoyable too. If you didn't like Nebraska, you wouldn't like this.

On the horizon line. The Goast of Tom Joad and Nebraska are clearly Bruce's best albums in any order you like. The big anthems are there just to pay for what he really loves to do, sing and song write

fire-side listening with the lights off.. Yes he writes songs about the more un-sexy elements of society and life, but the honesty and integrity in the lyrics, and the empathy with characters - even the ones you may not talk to or identify with in the real world... If you can listen to ANY of these songs and feel nothing, i'd suggest to check your heart's still beating. Springsteen at his best, no stadium sound here, just quietly challenging us to question why we are the way we are. Back to back listening with Nebraska.

Beauty from start to finish. Fragile and vulnerable, the entire album is a work of art.

Springsteen at his songwriting best.. A work of brutal beauty. Springsteen's cinematic tales of life on America's southern border contain some of his best lyrics with understated accompaniment on mostly acoustic instruments. No stadium anthems, not in these arrangements anyway, life for his characters is hard and stark. This can be seen as a continuation from "Nebraska" but is possibly more accessible. Bruce has never made a better album.
