whereisindy - Post-Punk Pandemic Renaissance Music.
South London band Shame return with a more complex vexations expressed as poised new-wave punk retrospective album peppered with fuzzy guitars and riffs and an album that feels more of a statement than a grand manifesto. It’s a bit here, there, up, down, everywhere. It’s not really thematic or having an overarching cohesive sound, but that shouldn’t stop you. A lot of bands during lockdown and isolation have adopted this method and resulted in some truly astonishing volumes of work. This is a new renaissance period of post-punk pandemic music developed in the same vein of art that came around from the 14th to 17th century fervent Renaissance period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic rebirth.
The post-punk deadly alternative tracks seems to be have been replaced and re-layered with more deep and interconnecting lyrics that cover the last year of lockdown and isolation with a perturbed attitude that yearns for escapism and pushing away anything that feels too virulent and damaging. Their album feels a lot softer and calm and easier than before, demonstration how a gear change doesn’t feel out of their comfort zones provided you have 5 very talented individuals whom can pull it off. With that change comes a growing confidence, which permeates throughout the album with songs like ‘March Day’ and ’Station Wagon’ - these and a few others show past influences coming to the front. Lead singer Charlie Steen ranges from emotional and deep resonance with soft echos and a degree of control unheard from the softer tones of his voice. This is also shown in ‘Human, For A Minute’ which shakes up the tempo of the album with tender stillness accompanied by percussions and some strings adding a degree of pure emotional focus that really stops you in your tracks. That being said, it’s not all different from their previous repertoire. ‘Harsh Degrees’, ‘Great Dog’, ‘Water In The Well’ and ‘Alphabet’ give off that same squawking and inharmonious buzzing and thrill that we love about Shame; the anger, anxiety, and tension floods back in with these four tracks.
It’s certainly has all you could want from them, and then some. The production is a revelation, the clarity, the arrangements and mixing are all to be praised. It showcases considerable thinking time spent into creating a post-punk volume of work that still has an air of freshness. This is post-punk pandemic renaissance music stuffed into approx. 40 minutes.

Drunk Tank Pink is currently sat at number 4 in the charts today.
To secure a place in the coveted top 10 we’re gonna have to shift some heavy numbers, and in order to achieve this, we must assemble..
It’s only mid January and Drunk Tank Pink by @shamebanduk is already my album of the year. Been waiting for a studio version of Human, for a minute since the KEXP live in 2018. Ridiculously good. Can’t wait to hopefully see it live one day.
Every single song on @shamebanduk's Drunk Tank Pink slaps. Every single damn song..

'Shame: "If this is a good year, everything can change around"
12 months later than planned, the London punks return with their James Ford-produced second album, 'Drunk Tank Pink', and optimism for a better year' .
On You ♡
It was written and recorded pre-COVID, but the remarkable new Drunk Tank Pink from shame is lockdown-friendly. As Charlie Steen told me, the LP is about "learning to enjoy your own company." .
