Canโ€™t stop listening to these guys. Pick up this and the other album Stranger Fruit. F!cking awesome!!!!

So Great, that I'm mad!. This is a great genre defining album, and I'm mad because it is way too short. The Sacrilegium's are very nice, but are not true tracks (more like intermission tracks) if you take those away the album only has 6 tracks, and that makes the album less than 20 minutes long, so I was depressed when it was over because I wanted more, because it was so great. This record is like getting a 3rd of the way through great sex and then the girl runs out the door and leaves with no explanation.

Art via music. I will do my best to explain why this album has impacted me so much. 1. This is much more than any regular album. The first time I heard the track Devil Is Fine, it was an emotional experience. Similar to when I first heard J.S. Bach's BWV 80 "Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott" or Metallica's "One". The first time I heard the track "Devil Is Fine", it took me _directly_ to the time when it was legal to own a slave here in the US. It took me to a relationship between an older and younger male slave, and I got to listen to the hopelessness in this one way conversation from the older male to the young boy. When the man talks about the Devil, I imagine what he's actually referring to is twofold - first, their owner. Second, the actual Devil. I learned since hearing this track that Christianity was forced upon slaves at the time, therefore I hear these lyrics and imagine they're mocking the Christian faith, all the while acknowledging the people that own them. Like rubbing two sticks together to make fire. "He (our owner/the Devil) promise many things", "I can't do him (our owner/the Devil) no wrong", "Oo I see him (our owner/the Devil) before long (to be punished or abused further)." Then the man turns his attention back to the young boy. "Nobody gonna hold your hand now, nobody gonna show you the way, no". "Little one, better find your way out." "Little one better run for your life." "Little one where you goin' with that knife." I feel deeply here the desperation and misery these slaves felt in their predicament, but yet had strength and an identify that couldn't be shook. The older man is telling this young boy how it is, in no uncertain terms. There's only one way out. Either staying or trying to leave, both ways come with great pain and suffering. I can listen to this track over and over again, and I love it more each time. 2. The rest of the album is gorgeous as well. "Come On Down" is a masterpiece. "Children's Summons" is a glorious piece. "Sacrilegium II" is soooo beautiful. I have to learn how to play it one day. I almost cannot believe one man wrote this piece. "Blood In The River" is a masterpiece as well. It's got a similar tone as "Devil Is Fine", minus the conversation. It's more aimed at the Christianity that was forced on them. They're explaining in clear language what they think of God. The rest of the album I don't think too much of.

I'm an avid listener of extreme metal and I'm loving this!. While not every song is to my particular liking, this album is a brilliant display of genre fusion.

nope. 25 minutes equals an e.p. not an album

Unexpected.. At first I was very confused seeing this in the Metal section as I though it was kinda Jazzy, only listening to "Devil Is Fine" I'll say, I kinda liked it since it had dark lyrics. So I listened to more and more to find a mix of Metal and somewhat Jazz outcome with the vocals with some screams here and there that make it way better. This holds a lot of darkness and story telling behind the calming/Metal vocals and great drumming. I like this a lot, but I do say, it was kinda short. I'm used to longer albums but that can stand to the side because this is a must own. I didn't think I would like this but it is really good and I can have it on repeat and play it around friends that aren't into Metal.

Really great album. What a great discovery. Buy this album, it's amazing.

interesting concept. This has potential and and interesting concept, but this album just feels rushed, thin, and the production and sound is flat. this could have benefit from some polishing and more work. It seems like a half done album that is still in the works

Too short and has filler. I pre ordered the album being blown away with the 3 songs available and have been patiently waiting for the release. That happened today and I am a little underwhelmed as 3 songs are just interludes and the other songs that are good are just too short in my opinion. I love what I hear but think it may have been rushed a tad

Amazingly Unique. Wow! This album is worth every penny. What a unique concept executed with soul and emotion. It may not be for everyone, but at least give it and you might fall in love with Zeal & Ardor like I did.

GRASSOLEN420. BEST ALBUM ALL 2017 THEY HAVE ANOTHER ALBUM JUST AS GREAT!!!!!!๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

Really unique. This album is awesome. It's one of the most unique records I've heard in a long time. Black metal with a twist. If you like black metal and are open to experimentation then get this record. I heard "Devil is Fine" on tv promoting a show about runaway slaves. As fans of metal, any band who can get metal music and musicians to be recognized deserves our attention. Check this record out.

Best New Band. Best new band i've heard in years. groundbreaking

Awesome. I like metal, im not religious, but I like gospel music. This hits the spot.

Amazing. I'm calling it....best album of the year. Even it's brutality is beautiful...don't let it pass you by.

Great Refreshing Original Heavy Music. One of the greatest bands recommended to me by the Naked Tattoo Guy. Keep up the great work, this is some awesome writing!

Perfect. Black metal mixed with electronic tracks and old school spiritual, all with a demonic twist. For anyone who craves something new and unique, try this.

Incredibly important. This album is easily one of the most important to be released under the "metal" umbrella category in the last year. It breaks every genre convention - which metal needs. A lot of metal is dependent on genre distinctions, and this album burns those genre distinctions to the ground and creates something totally unique. I would have never thought to combine old Gospel Spirituals with Black Metal elements - never - but now that I have listened to this album I can't imagine how else it could have been done. My only complaint is how short it is - at 25 minutes I feel like a lot more could be explored with such an album, and I hope the next is a bit more fleshed out. I HIGHLY recommend this album, for anyone; regardless of usual musical fare.

Very unique. I love this album and how original it is. The only reason it wasn't a 5 for me is I feel it could've done without the screams at most parts. I think the music could've spoken for itself and actually been more powerful in those parts without. Overall though a great and original album.

Meh. Interesting style and potential, but the sound quality is just awful. Bleh

Don't Stop.. Satan is Beauty, Harmony, Truth, Love.... and Endless Creativity. Your music represents all of these traits wonderfully. Thank you for this.

Maybe it just finds you. \m/ love it

Great album. Bandcamp is where I also found this originally and it is so good. Black metal is only a starting point for describing part of this album. Pick it up if you are tired of the same old stuff and are a bit adventurous.

Mesmerizing. As all are saying, it's different from anything you've heard. Is it black metal? Sort of. Mostly not. But as a diehard black metal fan, this is one of the greatest albums I've heard in a long time.

Amazing.. This is amazing band. New Kind of Black Metal music. Love it. I wouldn't highly recommend this to everyone for sure. \m/

Don't know what this is.. But I'm glad it exists.

It's. Not black matel. Luv the music the tune! Even my cat loves it but it's not rock an roll ......it's more of dub +electro its far from heavy metal! But I love the tune ,you copy?kinda play FPS eek some body๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ’”

Hipsters need to stop ruining everything. This is cultural appropriation, and I am offended.

Solid album. These guys sound pretty cool. It's great to hear new rock bands like these ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Will buy album when I get the chance {money๐Ÿ˜ฌ}

Negro spirituals+black metal =WIN. This is quite possibly one of the most original albums I have ever heard. I've had it for months via Bandcamp and can't stop listening to it. This is a must by!

Love it. Somebody mixed the right types of music

Wow. Awesomely refreshing, such a unique sound . From the first listen I was hooked !!!!

Devil is Fine - Zeal and Ardor. Just found this gang and Im enthralled already..... one moment, possessed, the next, ethereal. The layers in between, deep, dark, and dripping have me mesmerised. A holy wicked experience

Overall, something totally unique. This is one of those times when you hear something you never thought of, but then can't explain how it hasn't been done. Zeal & Ardor's combination of slave spirituals, extreme metal, and a few other genres I'll leave it to you to find, is a hypnotic and melancholy experience. The clang of pickaxes give rhythm to the clean vocals that mix and weave with more traditional extreme metal instrumentation and screams. The affect actually create a deeply textured listening experience that had been on hard rotation since I bought it. My only criticism are the three Sacraligium tracks. These are more experimental and feel unnecessary to me, almost like they are from a totally different album. However, the other six songs are great and unlike anything I've heard. Totally give this a try!!!

Devil is in the detail...it gets no darker than this...superb. If you really do think youโ€™ve heard every trick that modern metal has to offer, you might want to listen to this debut album for the Devil is Fine is unlike anything you will have heard before... it takes 25 minutes of blistering music to open this door...now I am waiting to see what is coming next...if its an improvement on this album it will have to be 5 star
