Just when I'd given up on 2016...... Angel comes in and sheds some light in the darkness. This album has pop, 70s vocals, 90s guitars, alt country and garage rock. And all done so real and fresh.

Massive talent in full bloom. If this album doesn't blow-up, I'm gonna lose faith in humanity. I discovered Angel's music back in 2012 with Half Way Home's sparse production that showcased her jaw-dropping pipes and impressive songwriting chops. Apart from White Fire and Windows, I honestly didn't flip for the follow-up. But, oh man, after a few listens... this is a monster. Lush, varied and just dripping with melodies and moments of sonic beauty. Every song offers something unique and rewarding. Heart Shaped Face and Those Were The Days are goldmines. Sister... on and on, I could just list the tracklist. You can hear so many influences (from Neil Young to Patsy Cline to Fleetwood Mac to The Pixies) but like all great musicians... it becomes something uniquely their own. Angel Olsen is a star.

Album of the year. Most music needs time to grow on you. Once this one does, all other music will seem like a waste of time. It's the soul of Angel eminating from the songs that has me hooked. Her singing is powerful, lyrics are interersting and emotion is overflowing. It was recorded live which although you can't tell, makes a huge difference. She doesn't sound like she wants to conform to the music world so you have to respect that. She has recorded many good songs, but this collection puts her at the top of her carrer. See her live, if you get the chance, the spell she casts is not quickly broken!
